And I to am a Fiddler I just have no display space so my figures end up strewn on my desk, replace another on a shelf, or get chucked into a plastic baggie and jammed into a collapsable ice chest in the hopes of either A) ending up on the desk and thus in my photocomics or B) getting traded for another figure.

I do think companies are beginning to realize that making a really cool exclusive and then not making it available to the average collector is a good way to piss off and lose an otherwise reliable collector base.

After all, Man-Bat and Pimp Daddy Destro both showed up online after the convention. So I think they’re beginning to get the idea.

I’m a bit of both now days.

And I really like getting a convention exclusive figure, because I get this feeling of a really big score, but I HATE when I can’t make it to the con to even try. The worst feeling though is when you do make it to the con and what you want is already sold out. And then you realize that people were allowed to buy multiple copies to sell on eBay.

Great article. I too am a Fiddler. Moncs can go chase themselves. I don’t get Mattel’s rationalle, “convention exclusives are specifically designed to reward fans who trek out to each show”. So basically they are choosing to alienate fans who do not have the means by which to travel and take time off from work to go to a Con.

Your idea of having a redeco or a non-canonical character is a good one. I went to BotCon this year, but I didn’t get into the Seeker madness, but I did get G1 Pepsi Prime, which was enough for me to enjoy and have as a souvineer.

Mattel’s decision to have Keldor as a convention exclusive is just like a big stab in the back.

Nice job Poe, and I am most definantly a fiddler. Trying to track down a convention exclusive is both irritating and soul charring. However, I remember being elated when i finally recieved my Man-Bat, but i should not have had to work as hard as i did to attain him. Hasbro has an edge on mettel in this category simply because they make their exclusives availible to the public through their own store at the price con goers paied minus shipping. Comparing the point and click ease to get stan lee and the back alley bartering i went through to get man bat, I’ll tell you the Hasbro expirience was much more pleasent.
