Odds ‘n Ends > The Hunt for the Blood Orchid

ODD: I spent twenty minutes making a list of movie sequel subtitles before settling on this one. The things I do for you people!

END: October is Halloween Month at PGPoA, and I am so not ready. The site’s design is prepped, thanks to the hard work of Webmaster OB1 (sounds like one of those novelty geek rappers), but I’m having to work on bringing the mojo. But fear not, the mojo shall be brought, even if I have to draw it out with leeches.

ODD: Toy Bender totally ripped me off. He asked nicely first, though, so we’re cool.

END: I’m going to be honest here: I’ve hit that period where the waiting for the next case of DCUC starts to make me a bit grumpy. It wouldn’t be so bad if I hadn’t been teased with the possibility of a DCUC4 case by now, and by the photos of series 4 and 5 at The Fwoosh and AFTimes. Review sets are the work of the devil.

ODD: It looks like Hasbro’s Indiana Jones toy line is coming to an end. I think its failure may indicate something about the true size of the action figure collectors’ market: it’s just not large enough to support a low-priced mass market line without significant child interest as well. Update: Toy Bender has a more thought-out take on why the line tanked.

END: A question occasioned by Mistah Plow: why aren’t there any Marvel Comics Lego sets? Particularly Iron Man, who seems like a natural for the concept.

ODD: I managed to score an unmasked Deathstroke off eBay for a reasonable price. How reasonable? You’ll have to wait for my end-of-the-year haulage post to find out. Expect plenty more Deathstroke glamour shots in the near future.

END: Poe’s Patented CSI Miami mini-review: “Won’t Get Fueled Again” Rather boring ep. Identified the culprit earlier than usual. Not enough Horatio. New ME needs a lot more character development.

  • lol I'm glad I ripped you off, it was one of my most popular posts in awhile. I'd like to do another one, but man I'd feel too guilty. I think I'd have to change the format or something.

I think the problem with a lot of superhero legos is they don't particularly lend themselves to vehicles. Iron Man might work, but you'd have to make up a bunch of things for him to ride around in. Batman has a stable of vehicles that lend themselves easily to Lego vehicles. He's the only superhero I can think of that has his own car, boat, motorcycle, helicopter, airplane, and tank.

  • I don't know where to comment about the Lego stuff anymore, so I split it up! :)

I agree with Paul, these things probably have to have good vehicle tie-ins. Given that, I'd think Plow's (on the Lego Batman post) suggestion of a 007 setup would work very well, as would my dream of Halo, and I think both have that mass appeal. I'd think both would sell just fine as toys as you have a good stable of vehicles and such for Halo and 007 can have all kinds of gadget vehicles and a strong cast of villain characters. Kids — ahem, and adults — can definitely identify with a cool looking Halo set, no matter if they are gamers or not, and obviously a game version would sell like hotcakes. That said, it would also have to be cross-platform and I wonder if that would now fly with Bungie having been spun off.

  • Hmmm….I’m not sure the new ME is there for character development…she has all the development they want already out there!

    Can’t wait for tomorrow!

  • @MG – Granted, but she needs a character hook, at least. Like how Delko is a ladies’ man, and Calleigh is the super-competent woman with relationship problems, Ryan is a screw-up, and Frank is a giant helpless baby. The old ME, Alexx, acted oddly motherly toward all the victims she worked on.

Price needs a hook like that…maybe, I don’t know, she could be adorably morbid, instead of creepily morbid like the other CSI MEs.

  • There were Spider-Man Legos about the time of the second movie…then Marvel went with a different company or something, which I think is how we got Batman Legos.

  • Okay screw vehicles for the Marvel Sets…

    we need Playsets like:

THE VAULT: A HUGE Vault Prison playset with little vehicles and holding cells featuring Carnage, The Sentry, Guardsmen, The Punisher and Matt Murdock in prison gear, and a bunch of nondescript lego prisoners.

WORLD WAR HULK ARENA: A big Madison Square garden playset with the illuminati and king hulk on throne!

SAVAGE LAND INVASION: A jungle themed playset with a quinjet, space ship, and skrull-vengers versus The New and Mighty Avengers

  • Hey Poe,

Are you finished with Marvel Legends? I wouldn't blame you if you are, but I was wondering about your thoughts on the scandalous Red Hulk wave: the apparent lack of availability, what causes it, the draconian price increase, what causes that, and despite those things, the surprising quality of most of the figures and its awesome BAF.

If you could somehow answer all that in haiku form, I'd think you're a mutant.

  • One more reason you won’t see LEGO Halo (the videogame) anytime soon.

    Multiplatform.

Unless Microsoft allows the game to go cross-platform (which in these days of incredibly shrinking console exclusives is highly unlikely) then I can’t see Travelers Tales or LEGO developing the title for one console. The 3rd parties need to release their games on as many systems possible to profit. Hence Square’s historic decision to launch Final Fantasy XIII on both 360 and PS3.

So you have to look outside videogame licenses and look at other facets of pop-culture. And I’m not so sure it matters if LEGO has the license or not. In fact, based on the success of these games, I think you could see a (hypothetical) LEGO Spider-Man followed by the recapture of the toy line. (Unless MEGA Blocks has a fleet of high-powered attorneys at their disposal).

That said – I’m going all in on my LEGO Harry Potter prediction. They have the license. The movie was moved to next summer. The stars seem to be aligning around this one.

  • @OB1: Bungie doesn’t own the rights to Halo – Microsoft does. There’s talk that Gearbox (developer of the Brothers in Arms series and upcoming Aliens: Colonial Marines) is also developing Halo 4.
