Mattel snuck in a big surprise (actually a pair of surprises, but more on that in the next post) on Mattycollector.com today.
DCUC Wave 8, due out mid-spring 2009, will feature:
- Hawkgirl
- Gentleman Ghost
- Dr. Fate (with chase classic version)
- Parademon (yellow and red versions w/ a 50/50 split!)
- Mr. Terrific
- Vigilante
- Commander Steel
- and a 10″ Giganta BAF
And I thought Killer Moth was an esoteric choice! You know a character is obscure when I have to Wikipedia him (Commander Steel). And is Vigilante even alive in the DCU right now?
My favorite in the line-up is probably Dr. Fate, but both Parademons are must-haves (OK, all of them are must-haves for me).

Wish it was the cowboy guy from the cartoon (Vigilante). Other than Hawkgirl,Dr. Fate and Giganta I know no one; which is fine by me want all of them! Although I wish Martian Mannhunter would be out in this wave.
Mattel is INSANE! I can't believe how great these look. This is friggin UNREAL!
HOw the hell did any toy company not come up with this idea sooner. A consistently styled sculpted line of figures that are done with with a modern update of the classice costumes AND modern variants!!!
HOPEFULLY, the final product looks great!
My favorites are HAWKGIRL, GIGANTA and DR. FATE! I REALLY REALLY HOPE the modern version is the standard version. The classic Dr. Fate looks cool but not as cool as captivating as the modern look.
Hawkgirl is AMAZING!!!!!!!!! I hope mattel hears how IMPRESSED i am with their new female leg hips. GREAT ENGINEERING!!!!!!!
As for GIGANTA! WOW! I was wondering how you guys were going to make that costume look "cool" and WOW….you made that classic costume of her look GREAT!!! The scupt from the hair, face, body! GOOOD JOB!
The Parademons are UNBELIEVABLE!! 2 versions in the same series????? The mattel guys are going to KILL ALL competition from hasbro, dc direct, etc etc etc. Geeeez Great sculpts and I LOVE the fact that they look like updated versions of the superpowers 80's line.
Mr. Terriffic is cool… I like that he has his attachments and that Dr. Fate attachment is PERFECT!!!!!
Lastly, I don't care of Commander Steel, Vigilante and Gentleman Ghost….although and interesting headless figure.
GREAT JOB MATTEL! GREAT GREAT JOB! Can't wait to order of TON of cases of these things. Sheeeesh!
I wonder how they're pulling off the "floating" top hat for Gentleman Ghost? That bit of engineering alone will probably warrant a buy for me, if I could ever find any DCUCs in the first place.
@Chris: almost my entire sentiments exactly. Although I wish the Green/Yellow Parademon was a tad bulkier like from the Villains United mini, but then again thats where I first saw a Parademon ever.
Vigilante? SWEET!
(I *LOVED* the Vigilante comics when I was a youth. I still think he's pretty awesome, in his own cheesy sort of way)

It looks to me like the the hat is just attached to the top of the collar in the back.
Those figures are actually nice — and I'm not a huge DC fan! It's a shame I can't find a single wave (way to go distro department) or else I'd buy them!!

I'm leaning towards the chase-classic version of Dr. Fate.
Also, I'm not very impressed by the MOTUC packaging, which is perfectly alright, because as soon as I get them, they won't be staying in package for very much longer. However, I was thinking of buying at least a He-Man and Skeletor to go with my other MOC He-Man/Skelly from the '02 line and the Commemorative Edition line…

Uh…huh? I like the wave, and the figures look great, but boy, they sure are getting to the Z-listers. I didn't recognize almost half the wave, and I consider myself decently well-read on the DC universe. This felt a little bit more like wave 18 then wave 8. Still, I have to give it to them, there is really no A-list recognizable character in this line-up outside of Hawkgirl, and she really doesn't compare to a Batman or a Superman. So I am glad they are sticking to that.
I am also very glad to see that some themes running throughout the line are continuing. We get another JLA member, a hero and their villain (although this is more like heroes, as it is JSA and Gentleman Ghost) and are also getting some more New Gods characters. Really happy about Fate and Mr. Terrific, was thinking we wouldn't see more JSA members for a while down the road.
Quality of the figures look stellar as ever. Also, waves like this give me even more confidence that I'll eventually see an Animal Man.
Maybe the Gentleman's hat float with the help of a magnet. That would be cool, I think.
@Dave: No offense but how can you not know who Dr. Fate, Mister Teriffic, Giganta and the Parademons are?
I would rate them C list characters…at most. While, Blue bettle and Booster Gold I think are C listers as well but they are so dorky looking. I'm happy that at least Dr.Fate and Mr. Terriffic don't have goofy googles like those guys.
@Dave: You'll probablly be happy with Wave 9.

And that next wave, if true, would make my day. Black Adam was my third most wanted figure when this line was announced, behind Deathstroke and Reverse Flash. That's 2 down!
Gentleman Ghost's hat "floats" via his monicle string, same as it does on the JLU figure. They bascially took the same idea and made him in DCUC.

I know I'm stepping back here a bit, but is it me, or could Hawkgirl easily be re-tooled into the Sorceress from MOTU?
There is a ton of re-tool potential between the two lines. Not sure we'll see it though.
