Odds ‘n Ends > 11/11/08

It’s time for another round of Odds ‘n Ends, your weekly dose of whatever the hell I happen to be thinking about at the moment.
ODD: OB1 and I are currently working on a fairly extensive site reworking for our one-year anniversary in December. If there’s anything about the site you’d like to see improved, or something you’d like to see us focus on more, let me know. [Update: OB1 panicked at the sight of the word "extensive" so let me change it to "significant." Feel better, Obe?]
END: Running this website–and funding my hobby–isn’t cheap, so I’m liquidating a small part of my collection. You can check out the sale page here. I’m willing to make deals for large lots, as I’d prefer to ship out as many figures at once as possible.
ODD: Came across these at Toys R’ Us the other day. More on that in a day or two.
END: Please join me in congratulating Red Kryptonite, who finished the first draft of her novel! Next up is undoubtedly a series of soul-crushing rejections, hopefully followed by the acceptance letter that makes it all worthwhile.

CONGRATS, Red Kryponite — Finishing the writing is actually the most difficult part. Finding an agent and/or publisher really isn’t that hard, labor-wise. It’s just very, VERY time consuming, and you HAVE to expect a lot of rejections before finding someone willing to publish you.
Some words of advice from someone who is both an editor AND a writer:
- Have someone you trust, and who has genuinely good editing skills, edit and proofread your manuscript BEFORE you try submitting it. Don’t go with your best buddy who may just tell you what you want to hear and not give you honest feedback. The more honest the feedback, the better your final book will be.
- IF a rejection letter comes with creative feedback from the editor, DO swallow your pride and take that feedback into careful consideration. Most editors wouldn’t waste time giving you feedback if they didn’t think your work was worth the effort.
- Tempting though it may be when you’re desperate to be published, DON’T automatically jump on the first publisher or agent that gives you an offer. Agents and publishers are like any other business — some are good, some are bad. Do your research carefully to make sure you sign on with an agent and/or publisher who is reputable and is one you actually LIKE. Once you sign a contract, you’re committed, so make sure you’re committed to someone who isn’t going to squander your talents or, worse, rip you off.
Good luck!

Thanks for the props, Poe - and for the most excellent advice, Sea-of-Green! For now I’m right chuffed to have it all tweaked and proofed, collected in one giant PDF and, for my own sanity, I’m putting it in a drawer until after the holidays. My brain needs to breathe free for a month or two.

Way to go, Red! Best of luck!
Regarding the Toys R’ Us find: I was going to make a snarky little crack about buying the Tony Romo one, then breaking his finger and benching him; until I realized that Tom Brady’s not in any better shape. Perhaps coincidentally, both have no stars, and the Peyton Manning had four.

If no one else has bought the Monkeyman and Pitt BAFs by January (which is the next time I’ll have money), I’ll buy ‘em from ya.

Poe, I saw those ProBots or whatever they are and was aghast at how truly horrifying they were. It’s one thing to have the Fox Robot dude … but why do you need a robot painted like a football player with that power rangers auto flip head feature.

I donno what you guys are talking about, I think the ProBots are cool. I was at TRU today, and if they had Tom Brady, he’d be on my desk RIGHT NOW. I was considering picking up a Brett Farve or the Vikings one (I liked the purple colour scheme). I refuse to buy any of the Mannings though.
@doubledumbassonyou, if thats all it takes to give you teh douche chills, then you don’t want to be ANYWHERE near me…
