DCUC and MOTUC news

Some pretty interesting DC Universe Classics and Masters of the Universe Classics news…

BigBadToyStore has posted four new DCUC two-packs:

  • Clayface and a muddy, black-and-gray repaint of DCUC1 Batman (link)
  • A re-release of the DCSH blue Supergirl and Lex Luthor (link)
  • Golden Age Hawkman and Hawkgirl (link)
  • And classic Superman (with Eradicator head with red eyes) and classic, green-headed Brainiac (link)

But here’s the thing–collectors have to order these sets for them actually to get produced. Over at Action Figure Insider, Mattel’s Toy Guru posted the following information about these exclusives:

Hey toy fans,

So here is the deal with the new DCUC 2 packs and new IH Mallah’s Revenge 6 packs that has shown up on some internet sites.

These are currently “proposed” packs which we would very much like to get to. What are the factors holding them up you say? Well fan interest that is what!

To generate this, we have offered these packs to online retailers in hopes of generating enough pre-sales and support going into production. If we do recieve that and can hit the minimum order quantity we need to go into production, these packs will roll out throughout 2009. Here is the skinny:

Batman vs Clayface

Batman will be in his black and gray costume with “mud splatter” effects. Clayface will be an exact reissue of this hard to find figure.

Superman vs Brainiac

This is proposed as a standard Superman figure (Eradicator head on the Wave 6 Superman body with red heat vision eyes) vs. Classic Brainiac (green head) with an all new head and coller piece. Brainic will come armed with Luthor’s gun from the 2007 figure.

Supergirl vs. Luthor

This will be a reissue of the Blue outfit Kara Supergirl and the power suit Lex, but perhapes with a little surprise in the accessories!

Golden Age Hawk Pack

Two new figures to start your golden age collection.

So again, all of these packs are pending fan interest. Because they are not being carried (at this time) by any of the large box stores, we need to generate a minimum order before we can turn on the green light and go into production.

And while many may ask “why not sell these on MattyCollector.com?”, well, that is because we have other more intensive packs with more obscure characters from the DC universe planned for the Matty.com offerings which are already going forward – check out the new issue of Toy Fare for a sneak peak at Alex Luthor and Ultraman. These 4 packs are meant to get harded to find figures back in collectors hands. (vs the Matty packs are all news characters in each pack).

If these packs do not get produced, we will try to work these characters back into the line down the road. But for now, the best way to show support for these packs is to place pre orders with your favorite online retailer today!

Also, look for a surprise reveal on MattyCollector.com right after Xmas this year!

Toy Guru

So if you really want these sets to see the light of day, you should pre-order them now.

I’ve got Lex Luthor and Supergirl and I’m not interested in the Golden Age Hawkperson pack, but I did order the other two sets. However, I think Mattel should consider not making Batman muddy, giving him the classic bat symbol instead of the yellow oval, and giving Superman normal eyes. That would make those particular two-packs much more appealing to collectors.

Now, that said, I do find this a little curious. Nothing implies the impending doom of an action figure line so much as when the manufacturer tells us they need to get enough orders to sell it–remember Darkstalkers? However, my gut tells me that’s not what’s happening here. This seems more like Mattel trying something new for the collectors to see how it works out.

One question I have is this: if, say, two or three of the packs get enough pre-orders, but one doesn’t, will they still produce the packs that do have enough orders?

Meanwhile, He-Man.org got an early sample of MOTUC Skeletor and took lots of photos. Check ’em out. I can’t wait for this figure. And I’m glad to see He-Man.org got the first sample this time around. Now, if only Mattel could see their way to sending me a sample…

Poe’s Point > Suggestions for the new DCUC 2-packs

I think that he wears it at one point in Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns but the costumes and coloring vary so much it's hard to tell. I think he wears it in the first fight with the leader of the mutants.

Just a thought…of the many variations of Batman's costume, was there ever one with a black-and-gray outfit and the yellow oval?

There was the all-black outfit with the oval in the 1990s, but I don't remember a black trim/yellow oval combo.

I'm interested in Brainiac… and the Golden Age Hawks.

But I would like to see pictures before I pre-order.

With the Hawks… I'm not sure if they will put a Kubert Hawk-headpiece on the Hawkman figure…(which I would 'love') or if they will give Hawkman the yellow-hood headpiece…which is not quite as "wonderful"… although I still may get the set.

I've always wanted a green Brainiac… so, I'll probably be 'in' for that.

  4. Poe

If I didn't already have a Clayface, I'd order that set in a heartbeat. And I'd still order it if Batman wasn't all muddy 😉

I am glad I found my Clayface at retail (just like my Two-Face and my black-and-gray DCSH Batman).

  5. outburst

I admit the mud-splattered Batman will only look good paired off with Clayface, but I don't mind it.

Batman's a bit like Iron Man that way, I don't mind having 500 variations of his suit.

  6. I got a sample for ya 😉

Is it too early to start wanting Hordak? at this point my motuc wishlist is Two-Bad, Trapjaw, and Hordak

  8. Chris

Classic Brainiac (green head) with an all new head and coller piece.

    Coller piece?

Also just came back from Target this morning and found a TON of pegs filled with Ares and Cyborg! My friend who works at Target said he couldn't open anymore cases since the cyborgs and ares have been sitting there for a week now.

Guess Mattel's doing this because sales MAY be slightly dropping? I know they lost me as a completist. I have all my dcuc stuff boxed up and ready to sell on Ebay! Yes, ebay. I have to since I paid triple the price for all of these things…especially since most are creaseless.

  9. Chris

Oh and I can't wait for that Skeletor either and I used up one of my personal days for work day so I can stay home and wait for my He-man and Beastman today!

    It's in transit!!!!!!

  10. Chris

It boggles my mind how there are people that love "Crap covered" Batman. That's probably one of the worst Batman figures I've seen. but to each his/her own i guess.

I will prob pick up Lex Luthor so I might pick him up. I'm happy with my brainiac but if the green guy looks better, I might pick it up. As for the rest…blah.

I'm not pre-ordering either….I think that's Bulls***. Who does that? Uhhh…we won't produce these guys till we get enough preorders. LOL Mattel cracks me up.

Mattel won't make a great black and gray Batman or a Superman with no heat ray vision for a while because they don't want to make DEFINITIVE versions of A-listers. It's a technique that a lot of toy companies use. They'll get an A-lister and gradually over the years make him/her look better and better as time goes by just to boost sales up.

Ex: Marvel Legends series 1 Cap America….Marvel Legends two pack Cap America. Of course when Hasbro took over that broke the pattern since I think all hasbro stuff is horrible.

In fact, I think that's the reason why Mattel hasn't rereleased the Black and Gray Batman from DCSH series 8. People LOVE that Batman including me AND it's going for 100 on ebay. WOW! Plus, even without the mud on that 2pk Batman…the sculpt still doesn't look as interesting the DCSH series 8 version.

Anyway, it's interesting to know that a few people I know are quitting the line. I'm glad I'm not a completist or I'd have to get "crap covered batman". LMAO

He's the only reminder I need as to why I will only pick up A listers and a rare select B listers in the line.

  11. I'm definitely down for three of those, but I also don't really need the Lex & Supergirl two-pack. I'm interested in what the new accessories are they're hinting at, though.

I also want to know about Classic Brainiac–the difference between his classic and modern versions is pretty significant.

  12. sadman2000

Heck yeah, I'm ordering that Clayface two-pack for sure in a little bit. I've been wanting that guy for over a year now.

  13. I'd probably buy all those figures, assuming that Clayface was fixed. I just passed on him a while back cause I didn't want the rubber arm.

But I'm not sure about ordering online. I know I'm all down for Matty stuff, but this preorder thing kinda rubs me the wrong way. I didn't collect much of DCSH, so I need to catch up.

Are there more pics? If I could see what the figures are proposed to look like, I'd probably order. But the descriptions alone leave me a bit puzzled.

  14. Scott

I can't see why Toys R Us wouldn't sell these 2-packs. The ones they have now seem to be doing well enough.
