Toy manufacturing costs to go down in 2009?

We’re all feeling the pinch of rising prices for toys, but could relief be around the corner? Richard Gottlieb thinks so:

It looks like toy manufacturers and consumers may be looking towards some pricing relief in 2009. There are a number of factors that contribute to the cost of toys made in China (and that means most toys). Three notable ones that have affected toy prices over the last twelve months have been:

  • The value of the Yuan versus the Dollar
  • Salary demands by Chinese factory worker
  • The cost of petroleum

  • They should drop just by looking at gas prices alone. The economy eventually catches up to the average folk.

    Okay, not really, but that's kinda what it says. Decreasing salary demands sounds like a scary situation for those over there.

  • That's true. The article did bother me in that regard. My toys will be cheaper because Chinese workers will have fewer bargaining rights…um, yay?

  • Hey… if I wanted to be socially or environmentally conscious, I'd have a different hobby! ;-)

    I'm all for slave labor to save a few cents, and then polluting the environment to get them here from over seas, and then to make my "carbon footprint" even bigger, having them put in oversized packaging with superfluous twisty ties.
