Now that we’re a couple of waves into the 3 3/4th inch Marvel Universe line from Hasbro, what’s everyone’s thoughts on them? I’ve been sort of happy with the line except for one big problem, the cost. It sucks paying eight bucks for one figure. It’s really limited what I get. Instead of buying a bunch of ninjas for Wolverine to fight, I have zero and I’m super picky about what heroes and villains I do pick up. I’m still on board with the line though, and I’m looking towards the future for some of the upcoming figures. The next comic wave in particular has got me school girl excited.

The Hulk/Cyclops pack is a good set because you get a better looking Hulk combined with a Cyclops that I wouldn’t mind owning. Seriously, is it just me or did that first green Hulk not look like Hulk enough? The black Spider-Man/Magneto pack is pure win (to borrow a phrase the kids are using), particularly because I’ve resisted the urge to purchase a black costumed Spider-Man. Now I can get him and a kick arse Magneto together in one set and not feel guilty on dropping eight bucks on a Spider-Man repaint. The Iron Man/Spider-Woman set is a must have. I’m completely insane for female spin-off characters, so this is right up my alley. The problem here is I already own the classic Iron Man, so I’m not really sure what to do with him.
So my advice to the folks in castle Hasbro would be to keep on making awesome figures and lower the damned price. I want to have a huge plethora of Marvel superheroes, but I can’t. Or maybe they could even just send me whole cases of figures for free. I think that would work out even better.

I'm loving them. I found wave 5 a few weeks ago so I now have a silver Iron Man and an Electro. I'm starting to haunt Wal-Marts in an attempt to snag their exclusives that are due this fall.
The figures look better,Hulk looks like a recolored red hulk,he still has the standing hair.
Oddly enough Spider-Woman is the only pack I skipped.
The new Hulk is not just a recolored Red Hulk, his head is completely different. I find this Hulk to be a bit too bright green, but it does represent and accurate Hulk color and it's actually a color of Hulk we haven't recieved in a long time.
I should have my review up of several of the new packs soon.
@Newton Gimmick:That's great then!
I'm not a fan of the scale for comic heroes (I accept it for Star Wars and Joes), but the sculpts and figures have been decent with a few glaring problems (Punisher, Hulk). The price is pretty bad though as they are locally 1 – 1.50 dollars more expensive than SW figures.
I'm only buying the comic packs for this scale. Two figures and a comic for $13 is a much better deal than 1 figure for $8. Plus it seems like a good way to get all the heavy hitters (at least as far as the heroes go). Although it kind of sucks to be getting figures in this scale that we don't have in Marvel Legends yet and may never get to. Like the Wrecking Crew, and a classic Ultron.
Also it seems like the comics are skipping issues in the release order, which makes zero sense to me.
@Newton Gimmick: Are these hitting? I was just at the nearest Wal-Mart and they had just put up a gajilion of wave 1.
I saw on Hisstank that someone found these at retail. I didn't think they were out yet!
I'm overall not too keen on Marvel Universe… just a bunch of things that, put together, just doesn't sit right with me.
I will however (well, only if it looks as good as it did in San Diego) pick up the Cap/Bucky two-pack they have planned. That looked nice.
Don't give up, Paul! I know I paid full price for Moon Knight and the Cap/Klaw pack, but I got the Thing for $5 and Ronin for $3 at Wal-Mart. (I keep a log of figures I buy; which is like a junkie keeping a running tally of where and when he shot up…) I might go back for the Hand Ninja, too.
I'm really not that interested in picking up 3.75" versions of characters I have in 6", and the few I have picked up haven't totally wowed me. Besides, with Minimates and DCUC I can't really afford them anyway.
tl;dr: Don't hate but not really interested.
Also, between these and the Minimate box set/Molecule Man-Arachne 2 pack, what's with all the love for Secret Wars? I know it was a big thing at the time and responsible for Venom and all, but like a lot of things Jim Shooter wrote, it hasn't aged well.
@Frowny McBeard:
Secret wars figures nostalgia from the 80's just like Super Powers for DCUC?
@MechaShiva:
Then they're dropping the ball by not including lenticular shields, dammit! (Also, if this is true, between the DCUC Super Powers homages and MOUTC, Hasbro's kind of getting schooled by Mattel. Unless you actually want to find the figures in stores.)
I spotted the Magneto set and Cyclops set at my local Wal-Mart, oh… 3-4 days ago I'd say, so they're definitely out at retail.
Yeah they're out. I picked them up at Target.
On that note (and a cheap plug), my review of the Hulk/Cyclops pack is up: http://www.infinitehollywood.com/2009/09/marvel-u…
Nice review Newton.
How timely… I bought all three packs today, and the only one I don't really want is Spider-Woman. She must go.
I only get the characters that display well with the Marvel Legends Galactis or the Sentinel. It is hard to pay $8 for a character when just a few years ago the same money could get you figures like Mecha-Hulk or Juggernaut — figures with more than five times the same plastic.
Inflation's a bitch!
Overall I think these figures are okay, but with some of them the plastic feels cheap and flexible. I only have a few of them because of the price though, and I have not seen any "must haves" that will be coming out.
Ugh I went to two stores today looking for these damn comic packs and came up with nothing.
Man DC always gets stuff last…
I'll keep looking.
@Newton Gimmick: Good review- I'm a sucker for Cyclops.
Any line that gives me Captain America and Klaw (seriously! Klaw!) is aces in my book.
As a huge Cap fan, I can only hope that Hasbro releases the "classic" version as a single.
Also, I FINALLY tracked down the Iron Fist … and he's amazing. One of the Top 5 figures I've bought this year.
I like the new Iron Fist Re-issue HE HAS A CLOSED FIST!!! I was going to be picky with this line, and for the most part I am, I only have a couple figures I have bought dupes of, but between my son and I we have a complete collection including alternate paints, save the TRU exclusive 3 packs. I'll pick those up next paycheck though.
Paul, I think I was the one that posted I picked them up first over on the tank. I keep having trouble finding you on here. They should have a link to Paul's Peg on here.
I've seen Hulk and Cyclops a few times. They look pretty cool. Magneto looks great too, though I don't collect this line, but otherwise he'd be a definite.
I want the TRU 3 packs, but they want like $30 for them. That'd be okay buy they aren't good enough for that to me. THey should have been cheaper.
