DCUC Plastic Man preview up at Fwoosh

Ever since I stopped collecting DCUC I’ve been remiss in covering it here, especially for those Poesters who remained fans of the site despite my faddish whims. So for those of you who haven’t seen it already, here’s a link to Fwoosh’s preview of the SDCC Plastic Man preview.

Plastic Man preview

For all that can be said about their business practices and the handling of their collector’s lines, I have to say Mattel (with the help of the Four Horsemen) makes some pretty damned awesome toys.

…but good luck getting them.

Also, can we all agree that we hate that the people who get preview samples get the SDCC versions and not the stripped-down ones that will be on Mattycollector? It just seems like an extra kick to the T-spheres. Though I suppose the joke’s on them for Orko…unless Mattel sends both versions…in which case I’ll be obliged to hate them even more.

This will be the first DCUC figure I buy; my daughter is obsessed with Brave and the Bold, and Plastic Man is one of her favorite characters.

The comment in the review about willing to regularly pay $20 for DCUC figures with this many accessories I completely agree with. I don't think Mattel is trying hard enough to make us feel like we get our money's worth.

@Mysterious Stranger: Why cheap out on the aestetics? I think having the arms pre-stretched out kind of negates the need to stretch more, doesn't it? As such, my stretchy arms will be in a drawer somewhere.

They shouldn't have to be customized–but if you find paint that matches, though, let me know so I can fix them.

@The Flash III: He did mention the hands on the stretchy arms and I think his reasoning for them being red is sound. Bendy, stretchy material does not take well to paint. After repeated stretchings/bendings the paint would eventually flake off.

Now that doesn't excuse them for not trying to put removable flesh colored hands on the ends of the arms. But with all the other parts in with this figure I can accept a little cost cutting on the arms. Besides, I'm a customizer so I'm sure I can rig up something to make the arms look better.

Wait, you stopped reviewing DCUC? Was that a declaration? Must have missed that one. Poe, please continue to review DCUC. We need you!

  6. The Flash III

I can live without the suitcase (though it would be cool), but the rest of the set is pretty nice.

I'm just wondering how any reviewer with any integrity could not mention how ugly the red hands on the stretchy arms are. They look bad, especially when he's packaged with regular arms that have flesh-colored hands.

@Fengschwing: I don't think it's really that bad. It's true that the sites who get review samples either do little more than a description and photos, or tend to temper their criticisms a bit, perhaps. But I think the two factors that most contribute to getting review samples are a.) connections at Mattel, and b.) relative size/popularity of the website.

Being situated close to Mattel HQ–and I believe most of those who get review samples are at least in California–probably doesn't hurt, either.

Also, just how far up Mattel's ass are Fwoosh jammed?

  9. Fengschwing

Likewise, don't give a fig about the suitcase.

You have to wonder, without the 4H, where Mattel would be…

This set looks terribly fun… if I can't get the SDCC exclusive, I think I'll be able to live without having a plastic suitcase.
