Ask Mattel > Answers for July 1 [Updated w/ Roundup]

1.) This may have been answered before, but I’ve never seen the answer so I’d like to ask again: does Mattel have the rights to make MOTUC figures based on the DC Comics 3-issue miniseries from the early ’80s? (For example, the evil sorcerer Damon, who originated in that comic.)

Yes. We also have rights to any new outfits or variants of MOTU figures that appear in these comics.

2.) In the past, Mattel has made an effort to explain some of the 200X aspects that appear in the MOTUC bios–for example, the 200X sword with Man-at-Arms. Since you’re not going to be adjusting the sculpt of King Grayskull for his re-release, will the “asterisk” symbol remain a mystery, or are you planning to work that in to the MOTUC mythos at some point?

Yes, we do have a backstory for the King Grayskull symbol and the He-Man symbol. You’ll have to wait and see!

3.) Jii Dee asks: If you have indeed found a solution to the MOTUC female bobble head issue as your Facebook posts assert, will we see the re-releases of all female figures come with this improved neck? or just the new females going forward?

Yes, if we re-issue female figures we will continue to do all we can to improve the neck joints.

4.) Snakeeyes22 asks: Why have the DCUC 2 packs on MattyCollector been declared a disappointment, even though they sold out eventually? This is a concern since I’d hate to see MOTUC’s future brought into question if some figures begin taking longer than minutes to sell out.

We were unable to sell out on the two-packs until they went on discount. In order for a line to continue on Mattycollector.com we need to be able to move the majority of the product at the original price.

5.) Onigaijan asks: Would Mattel ever think about releasing an Elongated Man figure in the DCU, or even a Ralph/Sue two pack a la Wondertwins? I need to complete my JLA!

Sure, but we can’t comment on unannounced figures. Ralph is a big favorite around Mattel!

  • Glad to see they are fans of Elongated Man. Hopefully they go a different route than they did with Plastic man. Ralph is a detective who happens to be able to stretch, not a stretchy oddball like Plastic Man.

  • Bring on Blonde Bikini Teela from DC Comics! She's the "Slave Leia" of MOTU.

  • My question was answered – cool!

I didn't know that the majority of the DC 2 packs had gone on discount. Or any at all for that matter.

  • The Q&A at Super Hero Times has two interesting comments about new Batman-related characters in DCUC…to be shown at SDCC.

  • @Snakeeyes22: I don't think they went on discount per se (like clearance) but were put on sale during the holidays and THAT'S when they sold out. They sold it as a sale not a warehouse clearance though in their eyes they had to cut the price to get them to move. Maybe that's a good follow up question – would the 2-packs be able to return at a lower sale price? Though I think we know the answer… "we're cheap penny-pinching corporate stooges and can't milk you out of every cent if we lower the price."

  • @TripleM:

Azbats, Jumpsuit Riddler, and Dick Robin are rumored for the next wave so it might be those. I'm curious who they'll announce.

  • @Mysterious Stranger

Thanks for some clarity there and good point about the price.
I find $30 hard to swallow at retail, and that's before shipping. 2 carded figures are the same price and have the CnC pieces!
The obscurity/who cares factor with some characters in the Matty sets probably hurt them too, but I'd probably be pissed if characters I really wanted were only available that way.

  • Wow, check out MOTUC portal using some questions for bio clarity! Good stuff, great use of questions. Nice companion site for the line, too.

  • not a bad round of questions over all. not much is going to get answered till SDCC.

    sidenote:

i love the round up you do poe. it really helps me find all the Q&As they do and i am sure it helps drive traffic to all the sites so it is a win win.

  • @Mysterious Stranger:

Sale? Discount? Clearance? Does it matter what they called it. The point was that they can't have to rely on making the items cheaper in order to sell them.

I have a feeling that DCUC will return to matty, but we'll end up paying more (which will allow them to sell less and still make a profit). I'm sure they're thinking, if they can get $20 for a single JLU figure, why not DCUC?

I do think there's another option to keep the prices down. If they can't get the sales up, why not bring the costs down? Matty might be a good place to bring items like gold Dr Fate, naked Cheetah, and modern Red Tornado, which are requested variants but require little to no new tooling.

  • Question 1's answer about the DC Comic MOTU rights is a bit confusing.

They said recently they didn't have the rights to do comic exclusive characters or decos in the DC MOTU comics, but now the suddenly do?

  • When did they say that? Comic book decos was the whole basis for the Toys R Us packs.
