With Mattel’s “leaking” of the MOTUC list through March 2011, there are some fans–mostly on the He-Man.org forums–who are harping on the fact that “changes were made” to “the list.” This also happened last month when everyone was so sure the September figure was going to be Roboto and/or Man-E-Faces, and then were shocked–SHOCKED!–when it was Carnivus. Now some of them are getting mad about the fact that the figures they were expecting weren’t announced (specifically Catra, believe it or not).
People really need to disregard any “lists” they’ve heard of. From what I can gather, there was apparently a list of MOTUC monthly figures bandied about sometime late last year or earlier this year, and those who heard about it have been relying on that list like it was gospel, making confident pronouncements or dropping tantalizing hints…before being smacked down (repeatedly) by the actual announcements.
I’ve occasionally been privy to some early information (not necessarily talking about MOTUC here), but I’ve always kept it tightly under wraps, for three reasons:
- Loyalty to the person who told it to me,
- The risk of looking the fool when a prediction turns out to be wrong, and
- People who taunt others with their secret knowledge are very, very annoying.
Mattel is not beholden to any schedule until they officially release it. Yes, there’s probably a tentative list of figures through 2015 out there, but it’s already changed several times and will no doubt change many times in the future. To quote Pirates of the Caribbean, it’s more of a guideline. No matter how good your source for such a list is–and that includes ToyGuru himself–everything is so subject to change that any list out there should be viewed as suspect.

I'm a lot happier since I stopped caring.
I'll get Roboto and Man-E (whenever he finally emerges) off Evilbay and be done with this whole business. Not much on ANYONES list has convinced me it's worth the hassle of getting back into this circus.
As to "who knows the most top-secret info"…..just pathetic.
Here, here.
I saw that thread on He-Man.org, but couldn't participate because of their home email address requirement(I don't have one)
It's almost hilarious and kind of bizzare, getting extremely pissed over something that doesn't exist, just a possible list(I just realized the triple rhyme of that sentence! bonus points!)
These guys must have been damn near suicidal when hoverboards turned out to be fake after that kid in their school swore up and down his cousin had one.
You know what the wierdest thing to me is? People are getting angry simply based on the order in which they'll be getting characters that they know will be made. I bet if Catra was even on the list, she's been held back to work out the neck issue. And Catra? I think she's pretty neat, but probably a bit plain since she'll be based on Filmation. I can't figure why she's THE most desireable, besides the sexy factor. Meanwhile, folks are up in arms about Vikor, which I find as fun as Wun-Dar as a way to honor the line's history.
Oh well, maybe we'll get a Catra glimpse in the next 2 hours. She-Ra does kind of need someone to punch.
That's ridiculous. Unless its up on Matty Collector, or has been released by a reputable source (i.e. ToyGuru or in ToyFare) I'm not going to believe it. Hell, I could make my own tentative list for releases, but it wouldn't mean squat. Fan boys just need to chill out. Its not like they're being inconvenienced by what figure is released or not released on a specific month. Just take 'em as they come and let the cards fall where they may. I was surprised by the list, but I can say I'm fairly pleased with what we know so far.
Yet another reminder why I don't frequent the .Org much.
You're right!
Here's a list I just got from a secret source(me)
April – Marlena
May – Gigantasaurus
June – Orko's girlfriend
July – Target Exclusive Lava Reflection Darth Vader
Let the fighting begin!
I do understand some disappointment and impatience, it comes with our geekiness. What sickens me is the fury and I saw some posts where people were just being dicks to each other, and in general, over things that weren't ever promised. Considering the how they are supposed to be spreading out popular characters, I think the list is pretty kick-ass.
I love to peruse forums (Including Poe's) about what people are saying and hearing about upcoming DCUC waves. Naturally, it's a bit depressing if figures you wanted that were rumored aren't in the wave, but it's fun to speculate and think about how figures would look if 4H got their hands on them.
I dont know why everyone gets all worked up about when roboto or man-e-faces. they will come out when they come out. When they finally announce the list i just want to see who was right and who was wrong. I am going all in next year
I think that collectors with early/secret/insider knowledge on on-going toylines merits its own discussion. Boy, there's so much to be said on that subject alone!
Aside, I find myself seeing a kindred soul in the outlook of @PrfktTear: I agree with you. What's the big deal? We already know the line is projected out to 2017. There's a good chance (almost guaranteed but hey, anything can happen in terms of what the market will bear from mid-2010 to 2017) that every collector is going to be satisfied in the long-term.
When getting into a line like MOTUC or DCU Classics, you've gotta play the long game. That means not focusing on the present but on tomorrow, realizing that missed opportunities will only present themselves again later on. Just hang in there and not only will you get what you want, but you'll get it at the price you want.
There's a lot to be said for the psychology of a toy collector. I think that as we try to re-create the plastic trappings of our childhood, the insidious hooks of that Veruca Salt I-Want-It-and-I-Want-It-Now instant gratification dopamine blast has sank into us from the get-go so it could follow us into adulthood.
Who cares when Ram-Man will see the light of day? Play the long game and you'll know he will, it's just a matter of time. Don't get me wrong, it's still a lot of fun to see glimpses and get excited over what might be coming. It's that feeling of anticipation that sends me into a nerdish frenzy every month because boy oh boy, does this line have me and my wallet hooked like the silly fanboy I am.
Similarly, @The Flash III, I feel you. I'm waiting for that Wally West ver. Flash and a full set of Rogues. Captain Cold now, Girder up for votes for later. Maybe when we get closer to the ineveitable Flash Classics line for the movie tie-in.
I also don't understand the wigging out about when certain characters show up. Of course it's just my opinion so feel free to disagree but I think the all-in sub is the best idea ever, and it works for this too. You'll eventually get whatever characters you're holding out for and completely avoid the hassle of logging on at specific dates and times to get your stuff. If you don't want a particular item that's included in the sub, throw it up on eBay and make your money back plus some extra for the hassle.
This is mostly the DOT-ORG nonsense. While some of the members there are great and the discussions can be fun and lively – I've found that there's a strong, undeserved sense of entitlement over there.
Those guys think that they have the right to know Mattel's entire schedule right through 2015-ish, and that they have the right to not have that schedule changed.
Moreover, there's the prevailing attitude there of 'this character was in the vintage line, so it takes precedence over everyone else.'
As long as everyone keeps buying them, I don't see this line stopping. So we'll get all the vintage characters eventually. Why sweat over when?
In a similar vein – Mattel has yet to announce 1990s versions of either Bret Hart, OR Shawn Michaels. But I know they'll come eventually, so I'm not worried about it. I'm just enjoying the WWE figures that -are- announced.
Leaked lists are pointless, and to me are no different from every other wish-list thread in existance, in all discovered and undiscovered dimensions.
I think some of the freakouts regarding MOTUC releases are the way that "Matty" likes to play the "one slow seller and the line is history" card. I know that's chiefly to sell the subscriptions and all, but it certainly doesn't give one a lot of confidence in the "long game," as Harlan put it.
Besides that, if I were a Princess of Power fan, I'd be wishing for more attention on that subline, rather than classic Masters guys, who are obviously the majority of the line at this point.
I'm not trying to excuse fanboy entitlement, but I can see where some of the concern comes from, at least.
Oh, and as a former Marvel Legends fanatic, I have a little understanding of being patient, only to be let down. (Though I did read comments that they were working to revive the line, so maybe it's the REALLY long game there.)
@Poe – exactly. If they told it to you as a secret, WHY WOULD YOU TELL IT TO OTHERS IN A PUBLIC FORUM?
Yet another reason I do not care that I am "banned" from .org for having "bounces to my e-mail address".
@DoctorKen: I'm not looking to dredge up any mud here, but I'm just curious, what is "bounces to my e-mail address"?
