Any questions for Mattel?

Shoot. This will be for the September 1 round.

  • MotUC has generally followed the vintage line in terms of names until we got to King Hsss. Can you explain why the character was not named in line with his vintage name, King Hiss instead?

Mattel has acquired the Voltron property, but did not give out any news about the line at SDCC. When can we expect some news about Voltron?

Mattel made the Brave Starr toys in the 80s. Does Mattel still have the rights to produce these figures currently?

Can Mattel explain the choice of characters for the DCUC Legion of Superheroes 12-pack? Will the DCUC Legion of Superheroes 12-pack be available on Matty?

Has the Avatar toy line been discontinued?

  • Has the sale of DCUC wave 5 been considered a success and if so, will we see re-releases of entire waves or single figures in the future?

There is, as you are well aware, a massive clamoring for Gentleman Ghost…

  • Are there ANY plans to go 3.75 with the Ghostbusters or MOTU line?

I know we have Infinite Heroes/GL upcoming, but what about non DC properties in that scale?

  • anecdotally, it seems a lot of fans are having more frequent issues w/ the QC of the motuc figs they've recieved, w/ loose joints in the ankles and bicep swivels being the most frequent complaint. is mattel addressing these issues?

  • Will anything ever be done for fans who have had the plastic on the Goddess figure crumble away? This seems like it needs to be addressed, as the figure is less than 1 year old and is from a premium collector targeted line sold at 20 dollars each.

  • Can we expect more non-main Ghostbuster figures in the line. Louis Tully was the only thing we got from SDCC and I can only take so many variants of Peter, Egon, Ray, and Winston?

  • To piggyback on the MOTUC quality control question, ToyGuru stated on he-man.org that the poor quality control on Orko's ears was "unacceptable." What will Mattel do to rectify this situation? Will replacement heads be issued to dissatisfied customers?

  • Nicholai: Aren't you excited for "Job Interview Winston" or "Hangin' Outside the Symphony Hall for Waiting for Dana Venkman" and of course my favorite, "Nighttime Ray" with swappable "Oh-face" head.

  • Will the TRU exclusive Joker figure have the improved neck joint, or the "triple bar bell" the standard release had?

  • Will there be a re-release of the Action League Atom figure? Maybe in a two pack with Batman or Aquaman?

  • 1. Will there be some quality improvement as regards the loose-foot-joints-issue of MOTUC figures?

    2. Will we see something like a 6" Ghostbusters accessory pack including at least up to 4 proton beams to go with all the figures that have been released so far?

    3. Will there be single carded release of ghosts for the 6" GB line?

  • The Ghostbusters 2 Winston with Slimer Blower is missing the football pads-style chest armour, will this be corrected before release?

  • @PrfktTear:

Remember how in Ghostbusters 2, Ray and Winston show up at a kids party and the kids start chanting that they want He-Man? Mattel could easily repackage a He-Man figure and pass it off as a reference to a Ghostbusters 2 line: Imagine that?

    *note: sarcasm"

  • what was the logistics reason for not including ghosts as accessories with Egon or Peter?

I can sorta figure this one out myself, but I want to hear it from the source.

  • A year into the Ghostbusters line with announcements made on pretty much the next year's worth of figures, we've yet to see or hear anything regarding the Stay Puft Marshamallow Man. Is Stay Puft actually on the drawing board as to how he would be executed, time of release, etc, or is he just on the list of things that would be nice to get around to at some stage if the line survives that long? Ditto with the Terror Dogs.

Would an eventual Dana Barrett figure be more likely to be a Zuul-posessed dress figure to match the upcoming Louis Tully, or a more 'civilian' look from earlier in the film?

We're still waiting on any further word regarding the fur-only Modern Cheetah variant that you said you had a plan for release of. Anything further you can tell us yet or is that consigned to the lucky few who already got them from Amazon and the like at the time of that wave's release?

On the Matty Collector forums there was mention made that no further DCUC complete wave box sets would be sold through the site. As an international customer this is very disappointing. Is there any chance that this decision might be revisited in the future so that international fans can get DCUC figures without having to go through 3rd parties and their extremely expensive shipping prices? It'd probably create far too much ire with US-based fans but even putting up a reduced number of wave sets that are only available to international fans?

    Thanks!

  • Any chance you would release the unproduced second series Bavestarr figures as they were originally?

  • @Barbeque17: That was too funny! I'm sitting here reading that at work and I literally laughed out loud… and everyone turned their heads looking at me like I'm funny.

So we'll have Birthday Party Ray & Winston with party hats and "Bonus Accessory" He-Man!

  • mattel:

fix the ankles! They are for a lack of a better term, the achilles heel of the MOTUC line.

  • 1. DCUC/MOTUC

Is there any chance we'll see the MOTUC female "buck/body-sculpt" used for a DCUC female character, for example Wonder Woman?

    2. DCUC

Is there any chance we'll see "collect and connect" characters (for example, Giganta) released as "standard-sized/regular" figures in the 6-7" scale?

    3. Toy Story 3

We've seen the new 6" scaled Lotso and Big Baby figures at SDCC, is there any chance we'll see other "new" characters from Toy Story 3 released in that scale, for example, Ken, Barbie, Trixie and/or Chuckles the Clown.

    4. Toy Story 3/MOTUC

Is there any chance we could see Twitch from Toy Story 3 released as a MOTUC figure, perhaps as a future convention exclusive (provided it is available on mattycollector.com after the show)?

  • I know you've stated before that it would not reduce the cost of figures, but to reduce the environmental cost, would you ever consider reducing the EXTREME amount of packaging used on DCUC and MOTUC figures? especially the two pack figures? there is so much space in the packaging and this just seems sooo wasteful.

  • Thank you for the Green Lantern Classics waves! I've been waiting for these since Hal came out. My question is this. We've seen two waves worth of figures previewed at SDCC and I know you can't speculate on future releases. However, if this line proves successful (and why wouldn't it?) how far along are designs for future waves? Will there be a significant wait (6 months or more) between Wave 2 and Wave 3 or would the wait be more like that seen between DCUC waves (2-3 months)?

  • @PrfktTear: Your examples of the repaint possibilities in the GB line are the exact reason I skipped the subscription. I really think there is potential with this property (come on devil dogs!!!) but I don't think they are confident enough to start tooling up figures like Dana, Vigo and the aforementioned dogs.

  • My SDCC Plastic man showed up missing his (regular) right hand! I called Mattel and they said call Matty Collector, and Matty Collector says to call Mattel. Whose responsible for replacement?

  • @Ren:

Unfortunately, if it was purchased at SDCC, Mattel has already said they had posted at the show that any exchanges had to occur during the show.

  • When will we ever see a Red Lantern Guy Gardner? DC Direct seemed to miss their opportunity in their Blackest Night line — will we see one in Green Lantern Classics instead?

  • For the eventual MOTUC Queen Marlena figure, would a Filmation-inspired design even be possible or would she by legal necessity need to be more 200X series styled (within the established MOTUC boundaries of course)?

  • I've got a couple of Green lantern questions.

Q: I know that distribution is completely out of your hands once a company like Walmart or Target has taken delivery but I was curious if you have an ETA as to when we should expect the Green Lantern 5 pack in stores?

Q: There seems to be no character too obscure to produce in the DCUC line will that continue in the Green Lantern line? I would love a new G'Nort figure. (Although I may be the only one.)

  • The Plastic Man was purchased via Matty Collector, whose website implores me to call Mattel for any problems with the actual product. But Mattel doesn't want anything to with it. I mentioned the phrase SDCC and the conversation was basically over at that point. I was under the assumption that paying close to 30 dollars for a 12 dollar toy would result in more customer service, not less. Sorry for the rant, just frustrated. I know this is not the right forum. But this is a question I'm dying to ask the people at Mattel who actually care about the DC and MOTU toylines.

  • @Darren: I was at a Wal-Mart in L.A. last weekend and they had fresh stock of the DCUC 5-packs but the shelf tag said specifically DCUC Green Lantern 5-pack. So I'd imagine they'll be arriving soon-ish.

  • Is it possible to print the CE certificate on MOTUC and other collectible items' packages, as it was done with the MOTUC/DCUC crossover sets? Some European collectors have problems with customs saying that MOTUC figures are not fullfilling the safety requirements of the European Union. (Which they actually do. It's only that the CE sign/certificate is missing, which in some cases results in customs not handing the items out to Matty's customers.)

  • Question:

Are you aware of how happy I'd be with a Gentleman Ghost rerelease with the Giganta parts without rebuying the entire wave?

  • Mysterious Stranger: I was being sarcastic of course, but we're already getting "We Believe You" Ray and Courtroom Peter before getting standard versions of all four Busters… thats just bad.

I'm not interested enough in the line to buy a sub. I don't have any desire to own a Marshmallow Gooey Ray, and other than for the Scalari Brother, I'd really have no reason to buy Courtroom Peter. I suppose the only other thought is to get the Courtroom Peter and swap his head with Slimed Peter (which I do not own).

I agree, they still seem to be testing the waters with GB and are hesitant to sink a lot of money into unique sculpts.

Just take a look at MOTUC. We've been getting a lot of the same parts again and again, so you know they haven't had to spend a lot of money on tooling except for new heads, armor, and weapons.

Now finally almost two years into the line we're getting a truly unique sculpt that really can't be used for another character (Roboto) and they've shown us King Hiss, he's another one (unless they release him in a Millennium deco) that does not have a lot of potential for re-use. Though, I suspect we'll see some of his parts again.

  • @PrfktTear: There are regular versions of Egon/Peter due out in Oct/Dec this year, which will complete the team.

  • Would Mattel consider a 5-pack or a 6-pack of Golden Age Justice Society figures.???

It could be one way to give fans characters that may be harder to sell as single packed …such characters as Johnny Thunder and T-Bolt, the Red (Ma Hunkel) Tornado,… variants that may not move as well…as the Golden Age Hawkman, and Hawkgirl, Sandman and Sandy, versions of the Atom, or Doctor Fate w/half helmet, etc.

  • We were given the option of heads or mini comics

We are looking into some plans for the mini comics but nothing to announce yet. We will definitely not be new pack in mini comics right now however. Fans were very clear they prefer alt. heads and extra accessories!

It was the fans at SDCC 2008 who voted for this live at our fan panel. Every year we let the fans at SDCC vote for something in the line. In 2008 fans voted for heads over mini comics, in 2009 fans voted for unflocked Panthor. Who knows what we will let fans vote on in 2010…the best way is to be at our fan panel! This is a special reward for those who come out, they actually get to affect the line in a permanent way

Why are you axing the additional (200X inspired) heads?

  • DC Universe figures are quite expensive as it is, especially considering the relatively modest tooling costs with the buck system. Is there any chance we could see a price reduction or an increase in accessories, ie Green Lantern constructs, to offset the cost?

  • @Sledgehama: They confirmed this one already. Though they never made a figure of her, they grabbed up the rights for mini-comics and for the future of the franchise, so they can produce her figure however they want to.

    Hope that helps.

  • The new weapons pack is going to have Roboto's weapon hands in Trapjaw's colors, but from the images we've seen from SDCC it appears that roboto is going to have female socket hands, while trapjaw's weapon hands had the male joint. This would mean that the trapjaw colored hands in the weapons pack would still only be compatible with Roboto, is this already final?

  • You guys need to read more Q&A's and such — lots of the above have already been answered.

@clark: They were early mock-ups. Roboto's removable arms will be done in the same way as TJ, so they'll be compatible with each other.

    MOTUC Question:

Vikor is awesome (and I bet plenty of fans would love a variant no-helmet head, hint hint). Are there any current plans to release characters (friends or foes) from Vikor's time?

    WWE Question:

Are Superstars currently signed with WWE's competitors still options for the Legends line; such as Razor Ramon, Double J, Diesel, or Mankind?

    DCUC Question:

If/when you get to Shining Knight in DCUC (pretty please?), would it be at all possible to have Silent Knight as a variant, since they wear very similar costumes?

  • @Damien: I hoped that they would have thought out the hands thing, but after they're grizzlor comment, that he was there in package so he was final, I thought to myself "roboto was in package too."

  • @clark: I hear you. I'm not sure what the deal was. Something about only having the original sculpts for the extra hands available out of package, or something. I dunno. But TG already did confirm the parts will be interchangeable. So no worries.

  • Is there any hope the "Masters of the Universe" toy line will be once again sold on public not just in the Internet Website like Matty Collector? But on Malls and other public markets and shops.

  • Unfortunately I apparently got my questions in late (by sending them at midnight on Sunday–I don't understand it either), so these won't be answered until September 15. I won't have any September 1 round of Q&A.
