A new direction for DCUC?

Batman’s latest costume

Before we go any further, let me clarify: this is a rumor. I think it’s much too early to begin venting one’s spleen as if this were fact. I want no aneurysms as a result of my posting this, got it?

Now then…over at Raving Toy Maniac’s ToyBuzz forum, a poster named Blue Canoe Stew, who I think has often been right in his claims about DCUC (but if I’m wrong, feel free to correct me), posted the following note.

Posted by Blue Canoe Stew on December 01, 2010 at 17:23:29:

It had been reported not long ago that Mattel was going to have a slightly different (closer)
relationship with DC. This would give Mattel a great deal of benefit in a lot of areas; one
being not having to wait until books are published to see new characters, shorelines [sic], etc. But here’s the deal – Mattel has received a sort of new mandate from WB and DC that their characters, for various reasons, need to be on the retail pegs in their current looks. This has already been started with the new GL Classics line and DCUC wave 17 (yes, the rumours for 17 are true).

Bottom line: as far as DCUC goes, if you’re a fan of contemporary DC the future looks very BRIGHT! If you’re not… well…

For those who don’t know, here’s the rumored DCUC 17 list–all Blackest Night/Brightest Day repaints.

So, is this true? Well, I know that Mattel’s contract with DC is up for renewal in 2011, and this could be part of the negotiations. I know a lot of DC’s upper management changed this past year, and a directive like this seems like it could be in keeping with that shake-up.

On the other hand, I know that, until the advent of Green Lantern Classics, it seemed like DC Direct was the one doing the contemporary outfits and lines while DCUC focused on the “classic” looks. So, if this rumor is true, will we see a change in direction for DC Direct too, or will both companies be putting out competing products?

Again, this is all a rumor. But if true, there could be a lot of angry collectors with incomplete or inaccurate teams…

    Hope for answer

@Poe: I understand that, but what I'm saying is it took Mattel about 1 1/2+ years to release the Movie Masters Two-Face, because they didn't have a picture reference until the movie was closer to its release. So if it takes that long for that imagine releasing multiples new characters?

@SubSonicJoint: The rumor specifically states Mattel would have early access to new designs, i.e., they'd have the design references months ahead of publication.
