DCUC Wave 19 is JSA-a-licious

MTV Geek has the scoop on the first pics of DC Universe Classics Wave 19. The line-up includes:

  • Golden Age Sandman
  • Golden Age Atom
  • Golden Age Hawkman
  • Lord Naga (a.k.a. Kobra)
  • Magog
  • Stargirl
  • C&C Stripe

  • Narked at the inclusion of Hawkman, we really need a Golden Age Flash, where's the Jay Garrick love?

I'm also hoping that Al Pratt is going to be diminutive enough to spare Mattel another Sinestro style 'wrong size' farrago.

That said, the rest of the wave is lovely, much better than that hideous cartoon wave thingie line up.

  • Wow, Sandman's sort of a letdown. I was really looking forward to him. Magog & Stripe look awesome.

  • Come to think of it, if they were going to release a Golden Age Hawkman, why not release that hooded version they canned a few years back?

  • That Naga's staff is going to my 200X King Hiss. Always hated the snakemen's staffs.

  • And all this time I thought King Hsss was a ripoff of that old Conan bad guy, and Serpentor was a ripoff of King Hsss.

Old Conan guy? What, Thulsa Doom from Conan the Barbarian?

To be honest, reptile-men are an ancient mythological creation, but the most direct literary antecedent is actually a Kull story, not a Conan story–"The Shadow Kingdom." One of my all-time favorite yarns, incidentally.

  • Definitely thinking MOTUC when I saw Lord Naga. Cool looking wave. I've really cooled down on my DCUC buying, but I will probably pick up Lord Naga and possible Magog.

  • No Jay Garrick Flash? WTF! I don't have any interest in Magog, especially after DC went out of their way to kill the guy recently. This is another hit and miss wave for me.

  • I love everyone except S.T.R.I.P.E. who just doesn't look like S.T.R.I.P.E. to me.

  • Not too keen on a Hawkman with a funky mask. At least not after a second modern version was the admission price for TRU Stratos.

Otherwise, pretty nice stuff. Stargirl looks cute without an attempt to sex her up, which is nice.

Magog is way more exciting to me than he probably should be, since I found Kingdom Come so incredible when it came out. He's really just a Cable parody in a ram helmet, right? I'm assuming he's on the JSA now?

  • Lord Naga and Magog are the obvious standouts here. Hawkman is laughable. Sandman looks interesting, only if for his colours.

  • I just saw the DC news, and it all makes sense!

The Super Friends and JSA being taken care of in complete waves, combined with the rumor that themed waves would be going away soon in favor of modern designs.

Apparently DC is relaunching their entire comics universe later this year. Every character will have at least a slightly new modern look that they'll want to have represented in this really huge bid to make their entire library of characters more friendly to new readers. It sounds interesting, but if this is a total reset, it seems crummy for people who have been sticking with the characters for so long. Also, literally 50 new #1 issues is a bit much for anyone to grab onto.

Finally, I'm not into waiting 10 years to finally complete the big 7 of the JLA again…in slightly different outfits. Also not loving the idea of more repeat characters needed for CnCs.

  • I wish I could be more excited about the old school JSA characters, but I'm not. :-/

Like most of the rest of you, sign me up for Naga and Magog and I'll have to think about the rest.

I agree with all of this. And release a yellow hooded G.A. Hawkman, not basically the same figure from wave six.

  • @ fengschwing:

I've been looking at The Atom over and over trying to figure out how small he's going to be. It appears that they shaved the height off of him with a new lower torso, possibly a new crotch piece, and calves. I think all of that will add up to almost a full head shorter than the other figures. He'll be a bit too tall, representative of maybe 5'5", but I can live with that

  • Based on the size comparisons of the arms, thighs and hands: I think this is accurate to how The Atom will look next to Hawkman

  • @ Poe:

Yeah, movie-Thulsa Doom. And snake-people are a part of mythology, yes, but that specific "look" is fairly recent. You know, the green or gold scale armor, the hooded headdress, and stuff like that.

They never said that. Themed waves are going away in favor of… non-themed waves (or less themed).

Magog looks like the Best Cable action figure out there, haha!

Well, that makes sense, since Magog was partly a parody of Cable.

  • BTW, does anyone know what the hell the magog fig was that chandler swallowed the gun from back in that friends episode? i could never get a good enough look at it, but the thing has spiral horns, a gold staff, and a gun, and if that wasn't magog, i'll be a monkey's uncle.

lord naga will get no doubt be a tough to find fig as people snag him relentlessly for more "deluxe serpentor" customs, like we saw w/ copperhead. and as DMW said, the staff would make a fine swap for hsss, so he'll get some buys for that too.

stripe looks like fun… if he wasn't essentially a 120 dollar figure. and yes, to those who were a tad hacked at stel, i do believe he was intended as stripe first. whatev. anyone righteously pissed about that can send me their stel parts in protest. 😉
