  • Saw Captain America with Dr. Mrs. Ghostal and Red Kryptonite this past weekend. I enjoyed it–more than Thor, and probably more than any Marvel flick since X-Men 2. We knew Joe Johnston could direct period pieces, and this was sort of a sideways sequel to The Rocketeer anyway. Chris Evans was great, Tommy Lee Jones did a great job being Tommy Lee Jones, and the Red Skull was Red Hulk to Jim Carrey’s The Mask. (I did find the Red Skull make-up a bit too cartoony, but I realize that–as well as the German-accented English among the foreign bad guys–was done to make the film accessible to kids, and that’s fine.) Did I think it was better than Batman Begins or The Dark Knight? No, but it was unquestionably more fun than those movies, and a nice set-up for The Avengers.
  • Speaking of Nick Fury & the Avengers, this spoof is cute. Love the slow clap.
  • As you may know, Mattel is bringing the DC Retro Action line to a close soon. Some fans have a petition up to save it. I wish ’em luck!
  • I received an email from a company called Geek Design, who create high-end furniture for storing and displaying collectibles.
  • Looks like I’ll be attending NYCC this year. I keep hoping more of SDCC’s hype will spill over into NYCC as SDCC becomes more crowded; maybe that will start this year, with the show moving back to October. The Tuesday after the show, incidentally, is the release date for Batman: Arkham City, the Arkham City trade paperback, and the Blu-Ray of Batman: Year One. Busy day for Bats.
  • In case you missed it, there were a couple small MOTUC news bits out of SDCC. First off, the Wind Raider will have real box art, painted by the same artist who did it thirty years ago.
  • Also, here are all the new bios that were revealed. Battleground Evil-Lyn’s is a doozy; Demo-Man’s disappointingly contains nothing about Demo-Man himself, nor explains what happened when Keldor merged with him (i.e., did any of Demo-Man’s mind merge as well, etc.).
  • Finally, it looks like there very well may be an exclusive at PowerCon: a pedestal for King Grayskull’s Orb of Sparkle Crest Toothpaste. The PowerCon part is speculation but seems likely.

  1. A big thanks for the shout-out to Poe, and another to the Poesters for their kind words! Poe, I won’t deign to hawk my wares on your site, but I did want to clarify a point brought up in the comments.

All of the furniture offered by Geek Design is made with furniture-grade plywood, which is a sturdier, albeit more expensive, alternative to particle board. Most prefab furniture is made from a particle or pressboard, which is just sawdust, wood chips, and glue. This is why cheap slap-together furniture bends, chips, and collapses very easily, and puts your collection at risk!

anyone know who the blue dude in the Wind Raider art is meant to be? top right corner – looks like he [actually it could be a she] is holding a thunder bolt . . . is s/he the new mystery dude – like they had in the 80's [the one from the poster – the masked stranger in the . . . Wind Raider]

  3. The Flash III

How about pimping the DCUC sub, too, Poe? I know DCUC has a lot of detractors, but it seems the sub will be the best (and maybe only) way for us to get closure on the Metal Men & Doom Patrol and get some other fan-demanded figures. Thanks!

  4. The Wind Raider looks fantastic, and when I saw the box art it made me squee like an over-excited fangirl. The fact that it does indeed come with the stand just makes it all that more awesome!!!

the orb stand isnt FOR PowerCon but the figure it comes with may be REVEALED at PowerCon!!!

Poe should cosplay his MOTU character in powercon!

you know, i'm actually completely ok w/ the incredibly vague demo-man bio… it gives more room for guys like me, who write fanfic bios, to give him something worthy.

yeah, the geek design stuff seems too pricey for what appears to be sauder furniture. oh well.

the wind raider getting box art is sweet… gotta say though, w/ all the new stuff being showcased this year, if we get one more excuse about how "the line's on a shoestring budget," i'm gonna scream. that's no longer valid.

Captain America is great movie fun. My only problem is that before the Avengers I wish we had another Cap film since I think the place we leave him in this movie would make for a very interesting story on its own.

Geek Design is out of my price range, but that is one really cool logo they've got!

It looks like Demo-Man's bio was an attempt to clarify who's in charge in Skeletor's head and smooth over some fan rage. I can understand that, but I'd have liked to learn more about this cool looking monster. Frequent friend of the site Thrawn thinks he look like a pirate ghost. And I agree because that is awesome.

If that orb stand is for Powercon…I'll be disappointed since this orb is useless and I love any 4H piece. Heck, I bought that one JLU Superman just because it had their Kandor with it. At the same time, I'll be happy for Powercon and everyone involved, they deserve it.

After seeing Pixel Dan's video, I'm ridiculously impressed by all of the little touches on the Wind Raider. It goes far beyond being a simple display piece while also coming with a great stand that makes it magnificent for display. $40 is a steal for that thing.

I think it's probably for the best that Mattel is giving up on DC Retro Action – and I really like the line (I'm old enough to have had Megos as a kid.). I never believed it could be profitable enough to please Mattel, and I'm a bit surprised it lasted as long as it did. It would have been ideal if the figures could have been produced through Art Asylum and Emce Toys, like the Star Trek ones, where they might have even been able to produce a cross-license World's Greatest Superheroes line like Mego had way back when.

I'm torn about NYCC. On one hand, as a New Yorker, I'm anxious for NYCC to rival SDCC. On the other hand, it's crowded enough as it is. SDCC was able to grow and evolve over years – decades, in fact. NYCC is still in its infancy. Every year it seems to get better, though, at least in terms of organization and planning. I do hope it remains more geek-oriented, though; A nerdy little cousin to the diverse, pop-culture behemoth out west.

Cap was fun; I put it on par with Iron Man and behind Dark Knight.

And @ Geek Design: I have a rule never to buy a storage device more expensive than what’s going on or in it. They’re very nice, but I think they missed their Nick Cage and Sebastian Bach target market by a few years!

I keep wishing for NYCC to turn into an East coast version of SDCC. They are trying but after last years program I'm iffy if they even get it. But I'll go because I really enjoy the show.

  12. so, firstly, I loved sparkle crest.. that commercial worked on my little kid self. I hope that pedestal isn't too hard to come by, I'd actually like it.

Captain America is now my second favorite comic book/superhero movie (after Superman, but that has ultimate nostalgia on its side and will be all but impossible to shake loose) Dark Knight is now number 3.. as you say, Cap was more fun, and that's important to me

the Demo-man bio sort of offhandedly mentions that a bit of consciousness was there, as it drove keldor insane, until he could control the powerful spirit inside him.. also, believing that the beings in despondos were "his" people seems like part of demo-man existing…

granted a bad bio, especially compared to evil-lyn's almost spolier laden one…. (miro's alive? she now lives powerless in the future with keldor junior? they were MARRIED… did he call her evil then too, like a pet name? seriously though… keldor is anakin)

i'm still on the fence about the wind-raider… not a vehicle I used to have, and not really one I have room for now…

  13. fengschwing

Poe, the 'End' about the wind raider stops rather abruptly, did you miss a bit out?
