Happy Icarius Day!

Link to the all-in-one sale page.

My NYCC write-up is coming soon (probably tomorrow), but in the meantime, we can celebrate/discuss the arrival of Icarius. As discussed at the Mattel NYCC panel on Saturday, the name “Icarius” was used for the vintage figure in Europe because the name “Flipshot” didn’t translate well. When it came time to name the Classics figure, the team chose Icarius because it was, well, cooler-sounding than “Flipshot.”

I have to say I think he’s a great-looking action figure, and I can’t wait to get mine.

Also available in today’s sale is the massive Legion of Super Heroes 12-pack for $180. I’m not a Legion fan and I can’t afford that thing anyway, but it looks awesome.

This is a big sale; there’s also the prop replica Ghost Trap and Battle Cat is back, along with Mer-Man, one of the finest MOTUC figures. Finally there’s Ray Stantz w/ Slime Blower and a number of DCUC figures available. I’ve got Icarius coming by subscription, so the only thing I might pick up is Ray.

He'll always be Flipshot to me. He, Hydron and Slush Head were my favorite figures in NA.

The unhelmeted head of Icarius is the spitting image of Val "Iceman" Kilmer. That makes him a keeper in my book regardless of the baby blue body suit.

After a couple of early reviews I realized that Icarius is totally awesome, so I got him. Now I have more reason to get Draego-man, to have some high flying battles between the two.

  4. Saw the GB's trap live and in person at the NYCC last week. It it truly awesome. If you have the bucks, it is a worthwhile purchase. I, alas, do not have the bucks…

  5. Legion pack sold out an hour ago

After see Horde Prime it´s dificult to me think about other MOTUC!
Of course I´ll buy all of then until there, but the Prime it´s a great increase for the collection. Finally Mattel goes for a way I really liked!

  7. Got all my MOTU guys….

Cool you got to see Horde Prime sans mask, but I'm the patient type so I'm happy to wait till mine comes.

    Ace McCloud…is that you?
I forgot about the Legion 12 pack but $180 is too rich for my blood…anyway, I'd only really want the Superboy figure anyway.

I really want a trap, but I just can't pull the trigger for an item that will cost over $150 with tax and shipping.

I mean, that does seem like quite a bit, right? What is the durability like? And how loud is it? I feel my power weakening….

Nabbed a trap and a 2nd slimeblower Winston. Need his head for the TRU 4 pack. Might ad well if it’s on sale. So excited for the trap. Successfully ordered from my iPhone within 10 min. Only some minor WSODs.

IIRC Icarius was his Euroname back in the late 80s

    • Newton Gimmick

Yeah I'm aware of that, just curious about why it's spelled that way. Unless it's not supposed to be like Icarus at all, which is possible… But seems unlikely.

    • Snarf! Snarf!

Well Mattel has a tendency to misspell for the sake of naming products: Stinkor, Dragstor, etc. Icarius kinda fits the theme…

Now getting him was easy, no WSOD at all… I was fearing the Legion of Legion fans would cause massive WSODing today…

RE: When it came time to name the Classics figure, the team chose Icarius because it was, well, cooler-sounding than “Flipshot.”

I thought it was b/c Nerf owned the rights to the name Flipshot. Flipshot sounds cooler to me; it sounds like the name of a Transformer.

I thought Nerf had the name Flipshot trademarked, anyway? Did they say anything about why it's Icarius and not Icarus? I actually prefer the Mattel name.

Not that it matters, Icarius is 1000% a better name than Flipshot. I'm tempted to pick him up.

    • You’re right, Nerf does have the Flipshot trademark. Neitlich tacked that comment on at the end of the discussion. That said, there might have been some legal wiggle room since Nerf doesn’t make action figures, but Icarius is a better name anyway.

I’m sure they named him Icarius instead of Icarus so they could trademark the name.
