    Fun Trivia:

The HEdorah suit weighed 350 lbs, and Kenpachiro Satsuma was the only actor they could find who was strong enough to wear it and do Hedorah's scenes (he had some wire assistance, but mostly that was Satsuma jumping around and wrestling under 350 lbs. of rubber). During filming, his appendix burst, and he had to be operated on while still half-in the costume. it was at that time that he learned something: Kenpachiro Satsuma is immune to pain killers. Ouch.

He later went on to play Gigan, and then Godzilla himself in the 1980s-90s movies. While filming Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, the heat of all the lights used for Godzilla's "meltdown" glow would often cause him to pass out – something they had trouble catching early, as the G-suit wasn't really built to fall over, and he would just slump while standing. For scenes with water, he would often be electrocuted – the Meltdown suit was powered by a rather thick cable going through the tail, and it occasionally shorted out in water.

    He retired after that.

    AVGN's Godzillathon… recommended watching.

And I want to see Final Wars so bad.

The only Godzilla movie I clearly remember (beyond the vs. King Kong one) was vs. Megalon. I loved how Godzilla and Jet Jaguar flashed baseball signs at each other before launching into craptastic flying kicks. That’s gotta be at my mom’s somewhere…

Interesting that you didn't mention that in the Japanese version of Kong, there is a change that likely led to the myth of the alternate ending. In the Japanese cut, Kong roars and then Godzilla roars at the end of the film, despite apparently being dead/defeated/whatever. That's left out in the American version, with only Kong's roar.

I suspect that's how the whole story started.

Was a great article to read

  6. Dead Man Walking

Well the article certainly dispelled some myths I had about Godzilla, but also reconfirmed that those movies are ridiculously stupid.

I thought it seemed like your style (even though I hadn't looked at the author name).

    Good job, Poe!

I have never seen any Godzilla-related movie or show. Curiously enough, while I had no interest in the film, the animated series based on the late-'90s American Godzilla movie looked cool to me. It appeared to have been produced by the same studio that created the Men in Black cartoon, which I liked a lot although I only ever saw two or three episodes.

    • You owe it to yourself to watch the original 1954 movie (the now-readily-available Japanese version, not the American version) and maybe King Kong vs. Godzilla. Again, the Japanese version is better, but unavailable to Americans; but the American version is pretty fun too. I grew up on it, and the KKvG Godzilla design remains my favorite.

I also highly recommend the 1964 Godzilla vs. Mothra and 2001's Godzilla, Mothra & King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack.

OOh,GMK Goji is my fave design and I love the show since it's directed by the dude who made the awesome gamera trilogy.

There are several versions of the original Japanese Godzilla available, most recently the Criterion release:

The 90's Godzilla cartoon is actually pretty good. It's not great, but for toons of the era, it's very good. In fact tit was a big hit and would have continued for a few more seasons, but Trendmasters opted not to make toys for it, because the damn Godzilla movie bombed so hard and subsequent Godzilla toys didn't sell as well… So the toon got axed because of the crappy movie.

Misconception #10: He doesn’t have a unit the size of the Chrysler Building. It’s actually a cloaca as big as a bus.

    Did I do that right?
