Star Wars Black Series 3 casepack revisited

Hasbro 2013 Star Wars Black Series logo

This isn’t the most thrilling story ever, but I find it interesting so I’m following up on it.

Phil Reed of puts forth the theory that if Chewbacca is in an upcoming wave (as is rumored), Hasbro may have wanted to make sure there were Hans on the pegs when Chewie came out. It’s possible. I was ready to blame the retailers, but Phil doesn’t think they’re to blame:

I’ve personally met with buyers at the large retailers and my opinion is that these buyers are professionals and know their lines far better than many collectors seem to think. They also track sales history and keep a close eye on demand, so in my opinion the retailers may have commented on case mix, but I doubt any retailer said “Stick Han Solo in this case or no!”

I still think two Stormtroopers, or a Stormtrooper and Boba Fett, make more sense for both Hasbro and the retailer. Throw Han in the actual wave Chewie’s in.

Another possibility is that this was a last-minute decision due to yanking Anakin from the third series, and there wasn’t time to produce more Stormtroopers so they threw in Han because he was already in production at the time. That doesn’t quite work, though, because that suggests they probably could have swapped in Boba Fett instead of Han.

So…I really have no idea why this happened.

Game of Thrones for Funko Legacy…confirmed?

Happy Thanksgiving, all!

I’m heading out to celebrate with my family, but before I leave I thought I’d mention this little news tidbit. As I mentioned yesterday, Game of Thrones has been rumored as one of the licenses in Funko’s upcoming 6″, realistically-style “Legacy” action figure line. But I hadn’t found any hints of official confirmation…until now. And it is a hint, but given that it comes from the president of Funko, it seems pretty promising.

From the Funko Fanatic forums:

Can we get some hints as to what’s going to be happening with the Legacy line? I mean, those two major licenses can’t just wait until February! Build the anticipation now! 🙂

Look, Winter is Coming…so maybe more hints then!

It seems pretty safe for GoT fans to get excited. Personally, I’d recommend waiting to see the figures. Funko has a lot of fun products out there, but no track record on realistically-sculpted articulated figures, whose collectors are notoriously hard to please. I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Odds ‘n Ends > Glyos & Power Lords drops, Funko Legacy rumors

  • The final Glyos wave of 2013 is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, December 1st at 9:30PM EST.
  • The Four Horsemen’s sale of the Power Lords: Slate Zone Soldier & Slate Zone Elite will begin on Monday, December 2nd at 3pm EST on Store Horsemen and for the first 48 hours it will ONLY be open to Power Lords Fan Club members. Sales for non-Power Lords Fan Club members will begin at 3pm on December 4th IF any stock remains after the first 48 hours.
  • I’m working with NoisyDvL5 of ItsAllTrue on a fun holiday project. It’s a bit last-minute, so hopefully we’ll be able to pull it together. If we do, I think you’ll like it.
  • Rumored licenses for Funko’s 6″ Legacy Line: Game of Thrones, a Whedonverse line or two, and The X-Files (although only The X-Files has been “officially” hinted at by someone at Funko). The GoT hint allegedly came from Popcultcha, who – again, allegedly – had the following figures up for pre-order, according to Funko Fanatic poster arjybarjy: “The Hound, White Walker, Tyrion Lannister, Ned Stark, Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow up for preorder, due in February 2014. They vary in size from 5″ for Tyrion to 8″ for The Hound and White Walker figs.” I couldn’t find them on Popcultcha, so either they got pulled or were never there in the first place (or…I just couldn’t find them). So like that Star Wars Black list from a couple of weeks back, consider this pure rumor-mongering for now.

Hasbro blows it on the SWB Series 3 case assortments

BBTS has Star Wars Black Series 3 up for preorder, and the case assortment appears to be: 1 Bespin Luke, 1 Prequel Kenobi, 1 Stormtrooper, and 1 ANH Han Solo.

Huh? As fond as I am of that Han, this doesn’t make sense. The first and obvious figure for that last slot is another Stormtrooper. After that, based on current sales, Boba Fett, or even another Sandtrooper.

And I’m guessing the reason BBTS upped the price of the individual Stormtrooper to $30 (and he still sold out in pre-order) was to cover the warehouse costs of all those Hans.

The only way this move makes any sense is if Hasbro’s thought process is the hoary adage that kids want heroes. But kids aren’t the real consumers of this line, and given that I’ve seen tons of Pilot Luke’s and R2s pegwarming but scarcely any Sandtroopers, it’s the wrong call.

UPDATE: Poester T16SkyHopp points out it’s possible – maybe even probable – that the big retailers dictated this case ratio, demanding another high-profile hero due to the aforementioned hoary adage. If so, that means the retailers are definitely not checking their own stock or paying any attention to what’s actually selling on their shelves.

Odds ‘n Ends > Sales & Effects

  • Amazon is having a sale on Star Wars Black (6″ and 3.75″). While I’d obviously prefer you buy them via my commissions link, I feel obligated to mention that other stores like Target will match Amazon’s prices if you show them to the cashier.
  • Tamashii has (finally) solicited the first of their awesome effects sets for 6″ figures. First up is the anime-style “impact crater,” which will be great for figures like Superman or Hulk. Personally I’m waiting for the fire and explosions sets, which should look good with Star Wars Black. BBTS already has them (gray, beige) and Amazon probably will too. (Via TNI)
  • Mattycollector is having an oddly complicated “7 Days of Cyber Monday” sale that neither starts nor ends on a Monday.
  • And since waiting for the Friday after Thanksgiving to start Black Friday sales is so 1993, here’s BBTS’s big sale.

Review > Scarabus (Gothitropolis, Four Horsemen)

It’s taken over two years for me to review this figure. There are a lot of reasons why, but “sheer procrastination” is probably the most honest one.

For those who don’t know, Scarabus was made and sold by design-studio-turned-toy-company The Four Horsemen. They started out as sculptors for McFarlane Toys in the mid-1990s. They were responsible for many fantastic and memorable figures. In 1999, they left McFarlane to form their own design studio and were swiftly contracted by Mattel to revamp the Masters of the Universe toyline. The result was Millennium (200x) MOTU. Mattel not only gave the 4H credit for their work on the line, but – in stark contrast to McFarlane – actually used the Horsemen as a selling point to collectors.
