Bastards of the Universe > “Reboot, Reuse, and Recycle”

I really don’t know how I feel about DC’s upcoming reboot/relaunch/retread thing they have coming up. I would love it if comics started selling again and weren’t just an afterthought to licensing…which I just realized is an ironic thing to say, since I buy way more DC figures than I do DC comics. But I was kind of hoping there would be a few more surprises in the 52 upcoming number-one issues, that DC would go all-out and make some riskier choices, like bringing back Amethyst or ‘Mazing Man or Angel Love or something.

Keep in mind, that my opinion is doubtless tainted since at least the last four comics I’ve been reading from DC have been cancelled. (Unknown Soldier, Warlord, Doom Patrol, and probably Xombi by now.)

The ‘alternate’ Pornstache…man, Poe goes all out and gets a MOTUC-style custom made for 339/1; while I stick a Minimate hairpiece and a cut-out mustache and eyebrows on a 200X Ice Armor He-Man. Still, mine is ready in fifteen minutes!

Bastard of the Universe > “Stay Thirsty, you Bastards”

For some reason, probably too many Dos Equis, I hear Pornstache with the voice of actor Jonathan Goldsmith, “The Most Interesting Man in the World.” Oddly, Hang ’em High is on as I type this, and he was in that for a scene or two.

The mask is the same one 339/1 was selling back in “Sell Out,” and it’s dumb luck that it fit Pornstache. I think it’s from a House of the Dead Ken figure from Palisades. The shackles? DCUC Mr. Miracle; and again, dumb luck they fit.

Bastards of the Universe > “Bad Day, Part IV”

A month long Bad Day? Yeah, I’ve had that before, too. Usually ended with a new cellmate–I mean, um, roommate–for me as well.

Next time, we get to see a little background of the man, the myth, the legend: Pornstache.

Bastards of the Universe > “Bad Day, Part III”

Big thanks to Poe for the newest Bastard, Pornstache! You know his name, but will he be friend or foe? “Bad day” concludes next week!

I already know in my head who Pornstache sounds like, but can’t say yet. It’s a voice you might recognize, but probably couldn’t put a name to; I certainly can’t…

Bastards of the Universe > “Bad Day, Part II”

I might’ve mentioned him before, but that Wal-Mart exclusive Marvel Universe Savage Frost Giant (and Loki) is pretty sweet. The only downside is, get one and you may very well want another…and there’s every possibility that the distribution is going to be an utter crapshoot on him. Good luck!

Bastards of the Universe > “Bad Day, Part I”

Bill’s bad day is going to go on for a while, but this seemed like a good way to catch up with the cast, since we’ll be introducing a new cast member or two later.

The Sectaurs in this one are a recent eBay purchase, during a local toy drought: I never had them as a kid, although they weren’t bad figures. And the fact that they were made by Coleco goes a long way for me: a Colecovision was my first game system.

Next time: the frost giant cometh! He may or may not be who you think…

Bastards of the Universe > “Library of Conan”

Between Vikor and Desaad, Conan’s building quite the support crew. Why? He’s really lazy. But, something often forgotten from his stories, Conan actually was pretty smart for his time. Admittedly, the bar was set mighty low…

Bastards of the Universe > “Stand-in”

Ah, Vikor: This seems like a good use of a $30 figure. It was that, or freeze him in a block of ice to wake up in the future…

Before working on this one, I re-read a ton of old Conan comics, mostly Savage Sword of Conan, and watched Conan the Barbarian again. The prophecy about Conan becoming king comes up, many, many times. Sometimes, it would be a red herring: Conan would seemingly win a kingdom, only to find it’s a land not worth having, or one that only recognizes queens, or would marry him off to a too-young princess. In some stories, Conan acts like he believes the prophecy is a stone-cold lock (which he should, having heard it so often) and in others he treats it as a bad joke. I’m trying to remember a story, possibly an R.E. Howard one, with a slightly older Conan talking about becoming a king almost like it was his retirement plan. If anyone remembers that one, let me know.

We won’t be using a certain set next time, just because I don’t have one!

Bastards of the Universe > “Sell out”

A sad day, today. Or rather, a month and a half or so ago, when I sent Poe 339/1 back. I’ll miss the ugly Bastard; but we’ve got some more figures from around the same era that will be showing up later.

Bastards of the Universe > “Sword pull…not an aphorism”

BBC America ran Excalibur quite a few times a couple months back, which led to me having to eBay this Merlin figure, from Lady Pendragon. I know there was a figure for her as well, based on the 90’s Rob Liefeld comic; but I couldn’t tell you if they were any good. (Yes, I can: probably not.)

I’m kind of surprised there aren’t more King Arthur and Merlin figures: even if you don’t base them on a movie version, it seems like they would sell all right. I do know there’s figures for the newer Merlin program, but I haven’t seen it, and if you have to explain that this kid is going to grow up to be Merlin, the figure doesn’t really appeal to me.
