SDCC 2008: DCUC

Where to begin? It’s funny that while DC’s comics continue to play second fiddle to Marvel, their comic-based animation and merchandising do very well–in some cases better than Marvel. I think that speaks to the appeal of the characters and universe. (Maybe DC should try starting up an Ultimate Marvel-style line of comics based on the continuity established in the animated universe, but in regular comics art style, not Bruce Timm’s. I’d buy ’em in a heartbeat.)

But I digress. Mattel’s DC panel at SDCC yesterday sounds like it was packed, and apparently some people are waiting in line for five hours to get their hands on the exclusives, so it seems DCUC is doing quite well.

For those of you who don’t want to have to peruse ten different websites to get all the news and photos regarding DCUC, I’ll break it down for you right here. At the end of the article is a list of links to photos. I’m going to stick to official announcements rather than include any of the possible future plans that were discussed.

Wave Four now has two Kay-Bee Toys exclusives: an unmasked Batman Beyond and a Sonic Arm Cyborg.

As previously rumored, Wave Six will consist of:

  • Regeneration Superman (with a chase variant of classic uniform w/ mullet)
  • Killer Moth (classic)
  • Hawkman
  • Mr. Miracle (Dr. Impossible chase)
  • Shazam (i.e. Captain Marvel)
  • BAF: Kalibak

Wave Six (as well as waves three to five) should be out by the end of the year. (Incidentally, it was announced that Wave Three will be out in “a week and a half.” Whatever, man. At this point, I’m pretty sure Godot is handling the shipping.)

Starting next year, DCUC will move up to 7-figure waves. I’m not entirely certain what the situation will be, but from what I can tell, each wave will have seven characters with two chases figures, and the “primary figure” will come with a base. I’m guessing the “primary figure” will be the heavy hitter of the wave, like the Flash or Martian Manhunter.

Incidentally, in addition to 7-figure waves, the case packs will change from six figures to ten. That means each case is going to cost about a hundred bucks. Mattel mentioned having special online retailer cases, so I sure hope that means cases that include both chase figures.

Anyway, figures scheduled for 2009 include:

  • Flash (Barry Allen)
  • Captain Cold
  • Kid Flash
  • Blue camo costume Aquaman
  • Big Barda (w/ unmasked variant)
  • Blue Beetle
  • Booster Gold (modern version, and will include Skeets, who opens to reveal Mr. Mind)
  • BAF: Atom Smasher

I like most of these selections. Going with the classic Killer Moth instead of his monstrous Charaxes form is a bit odd–I have to believe the Horsemen would have loved a crack at Charaxes–but I suppose it was more about reusing the buck bodies. Kid Flash’s inclusion indicates Mattel is definitely targeting adult collectors with DCUC since the character hasn’t been seen in that outfit in the comics in over twenty years.

I just knew we were getting Captain Cold, though. Sadly, he was my only accurate prediction.

In addition to the previously-announced Lightray and removable-helmet Orion, Toys ‘R Us will have the following exclusive two-packs by the end of the year.

  • Cyborg Superman and Mongul
  • Hal Jordan (year one costume) and Abin Sur

The new Mattel collector website, Mattycollector.com, will have quarterly exclusive two-packs. The first one will be available for Q4 2008, and features Adam Strange (modern) and Starfire.

Strange looks excellent, but there’s been a lot of comment on Starfire’s–how should I put this?–lack of prominent endowment. Particularly egregious, according to one fan, is the “lack of a cleavage line.” Funny, but I get what he’s saying–it looks like she’s wearing an orange bodysuit.

All in all, Mattel seems to have really big plans for DCUC. The big question is: how will their distribution be? DCUC3 is two months late, and some collectors are still having trouble finding DCUC2. And I’ll be very curious to see whether Mattycollector.com crashes on Monday morning, or whether they sell out of Lobo figures.

  • Thanks Poe, SOUNDS great. Wouldnt have series 2 yet if not for online stores, so I have to question distribution STILL!

  • Lobo is a bit out of place next to the DCUC characters. Check out what I mean when you place lobo next to the rest of the dcuc gang.

  • @ Pete: That's why I think he doesn't fit with the toy line. Comics yes but the line itself…my opinion…no….especially a biker looking guy with no bike.

  • Wow!! What a great "haul" to look forward to.

So many great DC heroes… so well done.

4H/Mattel has done such a great job on Flash, Captain Cold, Kid Flash, Blue Beetle, Big Barda, Mr. Miracle, Lightray, Orion, Kalibak,…Hawkman… and so many others. Cool to see even Killer Moth as an action figure.

Yeah, this is a great time to be an action figure collector… especially if you like the DCU heroes!!

    My complaints:

Yes, Starfire looks a bit "down"…"deflated"….

and even though Hawkman does look great…

he does look like he ran into a glass window with his "beak".!!(preeety hard by the looks of things.)

I still love them both… and it won't stop me from the purchase. I think this is the Greatest Action Figure Line …EVER.!!

Just keep those 4Horsemen doing things… and it'll be a "Legendary" Action Figure Line.

  • Oh, … and maybe one more "complaint" …as long as I'm getting "nit-picky":

Wally-Kid Flash's hair. Doesn't seem quite right to me. I thought his hair was always "pushed up" next to his part.. and he always had a lot of hair to push. (Carmine??)

I'm really glad we got Wally as Kid Flash. Brings back a lot of memories. Mattel is really thinking of the adult collector… and I'm "in" …for the ride.

Thanks, Mattel. Thanks, 4Horsemen. Thanks to all those who are making these figures possible.

  • Captain Marvel looks great, too!!

    SHAZAM!!

I hope we'll soon see the Marvel Family together again.!!

Captain Marvel, Jr. and Mary Marvel will certainly be welcomed by me to this line of action heroes.

The "new" Superman looks great, too… even with the mullet. He needed to be a bit bigger and a bit more imposing than his DCSH counterpart. He's supposed to be "the man". And they are working their way towards that.

A definitive, Classic Superman is edging his way toward us. Wonderful!!!

From the glowing eyes of Kalibak to Mr. Mind commandeering Skeets… I've only got one thing to say:

WE ARE REALLY LUCKY little action figure collectors.!!

    MAKE MINE MATTEL-FOUR HORSEMEN!!!

    (OK, that's two things… but who's countin'!!)

  • The “new” Superman looks great, too… even with the mullet. He needed to be a bit bigger and a bit more imposing than his DCSH counterpart. He’s supposed to be “the man”. And they are working their way towards that.

A definitive, Classic Superman is edging his way toward us. Wonderful!!!

If the glasses from the Eradicator in the Wal-Mart wave can be easily removed without leaving any real marks, a quick head swap with mullet-Superman and some paint on the eyes and you've got the even-more-perfect-than-DCSH Supes.

I suspect they'll actually make that figure, though. Probably as an exclusive.

  • One thing that still bothers me. Is the distribution. Honestly, I don't take Mattels word on wave 3 being out in a week and a half. Hey Poe do you think well get a short haired version of Superman? That longed haired Superman, in classic suit, looks great!! I really hope we'll see a short haired version soon.

  • @poe, judging from the pics, its looks like either they plug into the ears, or they just rest there. i really hope they just rest theyre, as sculpting ears arent my thing.

other than that, i like the new superman. i hope they make the ratio 50/50 (like with red/blue), so theyll both be easy to find. i was actually planning on making a custom using superman blue (or red) body, DCSH head and cape, and a bit of paint. between that and riddler, it looks like mattel's saving me some time.

  • Poe, I hope that Eradicator head-swap works.

I hope we get to see it. Cool!!

  • Seeing the comments here, I have to believe Mattel will offer a variant or exclusive version with the Eradicator head. They'd be burning money not to.

Maybe it could be a Mattycollector exclusive packaged with, say, Mr. Mxyzptlk and Krypto.

  • I hope we get a classic(Dick Grayson)Robin and Tim Drakes 90s Robin suit version.

  • Me too, eric. A Classic Dick Grayson- Robin is really needed.

I really want a Ra's Al Ghul, … and two or three differently styled Ninjas… that we can "army build" with.

Talia and Daimian(sp) would be great, too.

Batman and Robin could use a few ninjas to face off with. I hope the Ninjas come soon… but….

  • Thats a cool idea,Captainzero. Here's an idea, MATTEL could do with Robin(Grayson). They can mkae one with the 80's look( hiar w/bangs and w/green mask).Variation(hair with the two little curls w/balck mask(from the old 40s, 50s and 60s Batman comics). I think that'd be cool. I think it'll be cool to see lex and Brainiac on how they looked from The Superfriends cartoon. There's so many Brainiacs they could make.

  • I'm with you, eric. All of those ideas

would work for me. The Robins, Lex and the Brainiacs….

    Cool.!!!

  • This is a little …"way out there"… but I wanted to be one of the first to throw this out:

As you all probably know, DC has "licensed" the "Archie Heroes"(MLJ-Heroes) and they will soon be appearing in THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD.

IF…if… those heroes are successful in the "marketplace"… maybe..maybe…we could see these heroes as Mattel/4H/DCUC action figures.

I could get REALLY get excited about seeing heroes like… THE SHIELD, THE BLACK HOOD, HANGMAN, THE FLY, … and maybe THE COMET, THE WEB, JAGUAR, MR. JUSTICE, STEEL STERLING,… AND who knows who else from MLJ. (Heck, we may even get S&K'S THE SPIDER!! I think he was a great, mis-shapen villain!! Jack had him shaped like a spider.!!)

Well, these are the "fevered dreams" of action figure fans like me.

I think it would be soooo GREAT to get these heroes along with our "regular" DC heroes… A-ah!! The possibilities that lay ahead for us. Mind-boggling.!!

  • I want to say, although this may not be the thread to do it on,— that I really like the 4H/Mattel "take" on the Masters of the Universe Classics Figure … KING GRAYSKULL.

Nice figure. I really like it. And He-Man, Prince Adam, He-Ro, Hordak, King Hiss, Beastman, Mer-man and others from Eternia are on the way.

Looks like a great line to me. Promising!!

Thanks, again, to Mattel and the Four Horsemen.!!

  • AND… and there is "talk" that Dynamite will try to get their heroes made into Action Figures.

(I don't know which toy maker will make them but…)

As you know, they are building quite a cast of super-heroes like:

THE BLACK TERROR, THE DEATH-DEFYING 'DEVIL, THE GREEN LAMA, THE FLAME, MR. FACE, MASQUERADE, THE ARROW, THE SCARAB, HYDRO, PYROMAN, THE TARGET AND THE TARGETEERS, THE MIGHTY SAMSON, THE OWL, THE CLAW,…

AND so many others as possible ACTION FIGURES… like The SUPER-AMERICAN, SKYMAN, V-MAN, ROCKETMAN AND ROCKETGIRL, GRIM REAPER, BLACK VENUS, CAPTAIN FUTURE, SILVER STREAK, CAT(MAN) AND KITTEN, MAJOR VICTORY, THE WOMAN IN RED, THE LIBERATOR, AMAZING-MAN, U.S. JONES, BLUE BOLT, SUB-ZERO MAN, THE GREEN GIANT(Ho-ho-ho!! Sorry, I couldn't resist.), PHANTASMO, … and a number of others.

How great would it be to get a bunch of these guys… well sculpted, and well articulated in the 6" scale.!!!??

    OK.!! I'm really "fevered"!!

    Geeesh!!

  • And we DO NEED "army builders" like the LEAGUE OF ASSASSINS Ninjas!!

It IS time that Mattel/DC/4H gave us some "army building" figures.

My Ra's Al Ghul (when we get him) will need, at least, six ninjas.

And Talia will need as many…

Come on Mattel!! We need a bunch of ninjas!!

Two or three different styles, at least.
