Poe’s Point > Cy-Chop Addendum

I just wanted to offer my two cents on Cy-Chop. This isn’t a second review – Doc Thomas’s is the official review for PGPoA. But I wanted to offer my own thoughts on the figure, and this is my site so it’s my prerogative to do so.

I rather like the scissor-hands and the head. I don’t think the whole Micronauts-homage thing was a good idea, because I just don’t think it makes much sense (i.e., keep your peanut butter Micronauts out of my chocolate MOTU), but I like the design of the scissors and the sculpt of the head, and I don’t mind the silver. I like that the hands are interchangeable with other figures as well.

What I don’t like are the clear Roboto-style torso and the Beast Man limbs. Though in my Roboto review I wrote, “from an aesthetic standpoint I think [the clear chest] looks good,” over time I’ve come to like it less. It looks too cheap and toy-like, and feels brittle (and in Roboto’s case, for many collectors it was). As for the furry limbs, I just don’t think they work with the character design. They’re what make him look so slapdash to me; they clash thematically with the character’s “cyborg” design and demonic head.

If I’d been designing this figure, I would have recommended something like the Trap Jaw/Roboto upper legs and Hordak‘s or Horde Prime‘s lower legs, and perhaps the arms of Icarius, which we haven’t seen often in this line. That would give the character more cybernetic and Horde touches, which would have gone a long way toward making me like this figure more.

Opened and played with Cy-Chop and what I think would have been sweet would have been an armor accessory to completely cover the chest, new hands, and a furry/organic head the same blue as the body with similarities to the robotic face. Then we could have had the pre-cyborg version and the Beast Man parts would have made more sense.

    Because I don't know what he looked like before the accident and it's possible the arms and legs on this guy were grafted to the cyborg torso.

      I think that's the most interesting take on the figure so far. I'm not that deeply familiar with MOTUC lore to appreciate the backstory, but it makes perfect sense to want to see the "before cyberization" creature.

      I don't collect MOTUC, but I like to go to sites to look at the pictures. From that distance, I can still say I like one design, or don't like another, easily enough. And I like this Cy-Chop design quite a bit. I'm not as invested in toy history as some, and I didn't see the Micronauts homage, but I saw a potential homage of a different kind. One of the comic books I've enjoyed in the past few years is the original Doom Patrol run. No, not the Grant Morrison run everyone talks about, but the original run from the early 1960s. Cy-Chop reminds me of some wonderfully strange alternate-universe Bruno Premiani creature design, a creature that could easily fit in a rogues gallery that includes luminaries like the Animal-Vegetable Man, General Immortus, Master Mallah, or Rog the giant robot.

  2. Cy-Chop has grown on me quite a bit. I think he works in theory, but I agree about swapping out some of the parts. I don't really think the Beastman limbs work for him either. Slapping the Trap Jaw legs on him would bring him up a few pegs in my book… I don't care if they've already used them a dozen or so times, they're my favorite legs. I think giving him hands would have added a lot of value to the figure as well..
