A few quick observations about DCUC5

  • AmazoI’ll be doing separate reviews of each figure for OAFE, but I can already tell you I like these figures more than I expected to. This is easily the DCUC wave I was least interested in, but as action figures the characters are quite likable. I was particularly surprised by how much I like Amazo.
  • Almost every single hip on every figure was stuck. Fortunately, with a combination of the freezer trick, heating, and patience, I was able to free every stuck joint. There have been a lot of reports of breakage on DCUC figures, though, and I sometimes wonder how much of that is due to a lack of patience. I’d much rather spend an hour loosening my figures’ limbs than weeks looking for a replacement.
  • Metallo’s joints are very loose, especially his torso ball joint and the sockets in his hips. I ended up supergluing his hip sockets, though you can still pose his legs by popping out the peg and putting into the socket in a different position.
  • For the most part, the paint work on my set is very good. Only the Eradicator has a major flaw on his abdomen. And as far as I can tell, there are no incorrect limbs or feet.
  • The Eradicator loves his BluBlockers.
  • Amazo looks like a Christmas elf on steroids.

i too never new amazo other than his justice league counterpart. personally, i would have loved to see that version made. i guess he’s not super obsure, so he won;t be out anytime soon.

eradicator’s body complete crumbled when i tried to bent back the cape. the body cracked and it came apart. i got rid of the cape, cut off the symbol, and after reglueing the body back together, used maroon fabric as the cape. also got rid of the old fogie glasses. looks better.

@Dave: I agree that while us adult collectors can fix stuck limbs, any kid who gets one of these is going to break it right off, and that's inexcusable. Hopefully the inevitable angry parents' calls will help improve QC.

As for the skintones, they don't look so bad to me. Keep in mind my photos tend to be a little washed out due to the nature of my homemade light tent and lighting situation–I'm hoping Santa brings me a better light tent for Xmas.

@Takeittothemax: You got them for $6 each? Ugh, I hate you.

@Vinman: The "freezer trick" involves just putting the figure in your freezer for about twenty minutes, then taking it out and very, very gently working the joint until it comes free. The idea is the cold makes the joint harder and stiffer, and shrinks the paint that's holding the joint stuck. Of course, the cold also makes the plastic more brittle, so again, you have to be extremely careful. That said, this method works for me, without breakage, a good 80% of the time. The only figure I can remember consistently breaking because of this method was the Marvel Legends Blade (I went through two or three of that figure before I got one whose joints worked properly).

Maybe one day soon you can explain how to do these "tricks". I am not sure how to undo stuck joints and therefore have a few figs (back to early Marvel Legends even) that are stuck.

    Appreciate this site immensely!

I was lucky enough to be near a Wal-Mart that mistakenly put these on clearance for 5.88. I was able to get three out of the five, that'll make paying scalper prices for the other two a bit easier to swallow.

Although I acknowledge that some patience and work can fix the stuck hip problem, it is still an issue and shouldn’t be happening in the first place, at least on such a wide scale.

The paints and skintones especially look really flat in pictures. How do they hold hope in person?

Man I hope I find these. Really, really want Riddler and Atom. No sign of any DCUC at either of my Wal-Marts. REALLY hope I don’t have to go to eBay for this…

I think Amazo is a great looking figure, but like you, I just don’t quite get it.

  7. Poe

@Eric: Mostly I just froze. I heated when the joint was so tight, I thought that freezing and heating intermittently might help loosen the joint. But in the end, it was freezing that really fixed them all–some just needed a longer time in the freezer than others.

  8. @Esbat: Thats a heavy burden to carry. Care to help out another POEfer? 😉

Could you elaborate on the methods you utillized? I usually just use freezing or heating, and the one time I did both caused breaking.

  10. They look gorgeous in and out of package. I been buying these figures for other collectors on the Wizard Universe Message Boards because my walmarts seems to have bought pallets upon pallets of these babies. So far I'm finding, quite literally, 4 Riddlers for every one of the other 4 figures for some reason.

HA! Christmas Elf on steriods! I was wondering why i took him down my shelf. lol

I took everyone down and sold black lightning (battery commercial costume), riddler (car saleman suit) and eradicator (exactly what another member said…paris hilton glasses).

The only one I kept was atom and metallo which is the best baf imo!

  12. Poe

@SoG: I'm not denying that 😉 But this is my first real encounter with the character, other than the robotic version on Justice League.

  13. But, but … Amazo has ALWAYS looked like a Christmas elf on steroids …!

Nice review, still waitng patiently (ha) on these. Have never had a dcuc / dcsh break on me either. Whether its luck or patience, paint apps seem to be more of a concern recently.
