Mattel summons Scareglow

Mattel has posted some great photos of Scareglow, complete with his new bio, which doesn’t quite explain that weird, awesome accessory.

It does, however, clear up the whole “is he Skeletor’s ghost or just a guy who works for Skeletor?” issue–he’s an “Evil Ghost Serving Skeletor.” Better than “Evil Ghost Serving #52, Buffalo Chicken on Country Parmesan,” I suppose.

It also gives him what may be the first decently cool new “real name” for a MOTUC character. Infinita, by the way, has some basis in MOTU lore as the “evil sister planet” of Eternia in the early mini-comics and books (again, shades of the New Gods and Apokolips).

Scareglow – Real Name: Karak Nul

In life, Nul was a shifty bounty hunter who spent years attempting to break into Castle Grayskull, obsessed with legends that within lay the power to become the Master of the Universe. In death, he was cursed and banished into the dimension of Infinita – forever chained to his past crimes. He was brought back to Eternia by a magical spell of light cast by Skeletor to locate the most evil warriors in the five dimensions. Provided with a Scythe of Doom, Nul agreed to join forces with Skeletor and quickly became known as “Scareglow” due to his ability to burst forth and freeze his enemies with fright.

I have to admit, I’m getting a warm fuzzy feeling from Scareglow that I haven’t really had with MOTUC aside from maybe He-Man. I was lukewarm on SG when he was initially unveiled at SDCC, but I think he’s now my most-anticipated MOTUC after Trapjaw–maybe because Scareglow never got the 2002 figure he richly deserved.

I only wish he were coming out in October. I’m planning some fun Halloween-related stuff for that month, and it’s a bummer I can’t get a review of him in there (unless the Mattel review sample gods smile down upon me–please?).

As for the accessory, the best guess I’ve read (on the He-Man.org forums) is that it’s intended as some sort of taunt from whatever powers banished him after his death–it’s the Key of Grayskull, but for some reason it either doesn’t work or he can never use it (hence “forever chained to his past crimes”).

By the way, check out the cool effect around the bottom of the cape!
