fanmode-copy Corey Tincher reviews the Mezco Toyz Hellboy II: The Golden Army Hellboy (black-shirted version with cat, six-pack and Samaritan) 7-inch- scale figure. Excerpt: “It might be a few dollars overpriced, but he’s just a really well made figure that uses a strong, heavy plastic that feels like $16 in your hands.”

Michael Crawford reviews the Diamond Select Toys Star Wars Ultimate Quarter Scale Darth Maul figure. Excerpt: “I had to actually get THREE of these figures, because the first two broke right out of the package.” (more…)

Pic of the day

Robocop from Tons-of-Toys.com (Robocop and the Ultra Police, Kenner, 1988)

Poe’s note: One of my all-time favorite action figures. As a kid, I was very concerned with making sure the figure looked accurate to the movie, so I colored his visor, gloves and pelvis with a black Sharpie. After Robocop 2 came out I also played around with Testor’s paints until I gave my figure a blue sheen. That was also when I learned that enamel paints leave a tacky feeling on most action figures.

Solved Mysteries

A friend of mine emailed me photos of a mysterious toy, hoping I could identify it:

Mystery Toy

I couldn’t, but with a few well-placed inquiries to my usual sources, it was ID’ed by Greg the Bunny of the RTM forum as the Star Wars “Vehicle Maintenance Energizer” from the old 1980s Kenner line.

VME

It’s a glorified gas pump. This was definitely one of those consolation toys your parents bought you when the store was sold out of speeder bikes and Jabba playsets.

First off, let’s get one thing straight–in theory, that pasty, blobby white shape in the picture is intended to resemble the face of actor David Hasselhoff, circa 1983. In theory. In practice, the only clue that this is Mr. Baywatch is the distinctive wind-blown coiffure. With its lipless, tepid smile, beady eyes fixed in a zombie-like stare, and milky, translucent-looking skin, this figure resembles an albino frog more than every German’s favorite actor.

I offer you this photo of an albino frog for comparison. I think you’ll find the similarities disturbingly apparent. (more…)
