fanmode-copy Michael Crawford reviews the Hot Toys Hellboy II: The Golden Army Hellboy 1/6-scale figure. Excerpt: “Hot Toys is sort of like Pixar these days – it’s hard to judge them on the same scale as everyone else, because their work is so far above the competition.”

yo go re reviews the Hasbro Transformers Revenge of the Fallen Scout class Ransack figure. Excerpt: “Forget the rehashed Ironhides, Starscreams or Bumblebees, and go for something new. Or, in this case, something old.”

Paul’s Peg > “A Brief Retrospective on Lightsaber Toting Figures” or “Kids Have it Too Easy”

While going through my collection of open Star Wars figures, it suddenly came to me that kids have it really great when it comes to having figures to clash lightsabers. Back in my day there were only three official Star Wars figures that had lightsabers: Obi-Wan, Luke Skywalker, and Darth Vader. You may have had multiple versions of Luke, but if you wanted to reenact a lightsaber scene that didn’t involve coloring a toothpick and putting it in the hands of a Stormtrooper, then you had to go with those three choices. These days, there’s a virtual cornucopia of lightsaber wielding figures to choose from.

Before we proceed let me pause for a moment. I’m not saying that kids couldn’t make other figures into evil or good lightsaber battlers. Kids have tons of imagination and can include other figures into their play worlds. Hell, I literally had Steelheart of the Silver Hawks marry Green Lantern at one point in my childhood for one of my “plots” and I also managed to use Encyclopedias to fill in for the Death Star trash compactor. What I’m getting at here is that there’s one thing between having fun as a kid by mixing all your figures and another where you’re trying to fit the stories you make up into the same world of the movies you’ve seen roughly a billion times. Paul’s Peg > The G.I. Joe, Star Wars, and Marvel Universe News Brief

Paul here with more Star Wars and G.I. Joe news. This time I threw in a Marvel Universe tidbit, to make it a kind of Hasbro themed…. in a way.

Sideshow’s Exclusive Crimson Cobra Commander
– If you go to San Diego Comic Con this year and want to buy Poe nice gifts, be sure to keep an eye out Sideshow’s Crimson Cobra Commander. Hope you pre-ordered him!

The Creator’s of G.I. Joe Resolute Answer Fan Questions – There’s a nifty video interview with the creator’s of G.I. Joe: Resolute. If you have a burning question about the series, they might have answered it, so check it out.

Alley Viper Review
– My online friend Last Best Angry Man got himself a new Alley Viper and it is amazing. I can’t wait for that dang seven pack to become available… and they better release him in some other form so I can squad build. (I can’t afford to army build.)

Nick Fury Mail-Away Deets – In order to get Nick Fury from the Marvel Universe line of figures, you’re going to have to pay to get Marvel’s online comic subscription service. Strangely enough, Poe offered his insights on these kinds of services recently.

Galactic Hero Max Rebo! – For those of you who like Galactic Heroes, there will be a Jabba’s sail barge cinema scene that features an ultra cute Max Rebo. So awesome.

5 Questions With > MisterBigBo

Welcome to the first of what I hope will be many interviews with fellow collectors!

MisterBigBo, who comments here occasionally, is a real-life friend of mine who I’ve actually spent time with in person. He’s taken time out of his busy schedule as a brand-new dad to answer a few questions about his toy collecting.

Codename: MisterBigBo
Base of Operations:
The Commiewealth of Taxachusetts
History:
Regular ole suburban lower middle class kid who grew up in the 80s. Star Wars fan first, but like most boys of that generation I had a healthy action figure collection. I have gone on to become a teacher, a dad, and study traditional Japanese martial arts, but the toys are still there.

1.) What were your favorite toys or toy lines as a child?

Though I started with Star Wars, moved with the trends to Transformers and He-Man for a while, GI Joe was my favorite. The designs and the articulation caused me to stay with the line into junior high, after most of my friends had moved on. As a youngster I had a little of everything: a few M.A.S.K. vehicles, and one or two Sky Commanders, Army Antz, Silver Hawks, C.O.P.S., Centurins, Marvel Secret Wars and D.C. Super Powers, Captain Power, Chuck Norris Karate Kommandos, Battle Beasts, Starcom, Eagle Force. . . those are the faves that I can remember right now . I suppose my tendency these days to collect only one or a few of any given line is a continuation of that trend. (more…)

Poe in Pictures > March 1985

pg_march_1985

Mumma Ghostal (or it may have been Sister Ghostal) came across this photo recently, revealing a young Poe surrounded by a cornucopia of plastic playthings (and proudly showing off his Rancor, whose battered, one-legged carcass still resides in my parents’ attic). Once I saw it, I had to inventory all the toys shown in the photo.

Can you find them all?

Masters of the Universe toys:

  • Castle Grayskull
  • He-Man
  • Prince Adam
  • Zoar
  • Faker
  • Beast Man
  • Battle Cat
  • Mer-Man
  • Wind Raider
  • Attak Trak

Star Wars toys:

  • Luke Skywalker in Jedi Knight Outfit
  • Nien Nunb
  • C-3P0
  • Gamorrean Guard
  • Klaatu
  • Weequay
  • Biker Scout
  • Speeder Bike
  • Rancor
  • Princess Leia in Boushh Disguise
  • Chewbacca
  • Han Solo
  • 8D8
  • Squid Head
  • Warok Teebo
  • Logray

There are a few things I’m not sure about: who did the little spear in the lower right corner (next to Weequay) belong to? And is that an Intellivision in the upper right corner, or something else? As for the coloring book, I have no idea what it is, but it looks MOTU-esque to me.

Paul’s Peg > G.I. Joe and Star Wars News Brief

Hey kids, I’ve got some more interesting Star Wars and G.I. Joe news. Let’s do this!

gi-joe-complete-series

G.I. Joe Complete Series on DVD – Even though most of the episodes are horrendous, you know you want the whole series on DVD if you’re a G.I. Joe fan. Shout! Factory has released some deets on the 17 disc box set. It’s going to be available in July and come with some neat extras. Remember, this really isn’t the “whole” series. The even worse DIC series isn’t included.

Undertow is Shipping – The 2009 G.I. Joe Collector’s Club figure, Undertow, is now shipping. That reminds me, I never changed my address with the club. I wonder if I’ll get him…

The Turbo Tank is Awesome – The next big Star Wars vehicle is going to be the Turbo Tank and I pray to sweet Raptor Jesus that I have a job when it comes out. One dude already has one! Lucky jerk.

Another Clone – Commander Ponds is going to be coming out in Animated series style. I have no idea who he is, but he looks kind of neat.
