Odds ‘n Ends > Beast Saga Vid, NECA does Half-Life & Prometheus, Nerf Intimidation, Figma Link

  • Damn, I am way overdue for one of these. Right now my own toy collection is somewhat in chaos, as we’re packing for a move to our very first house. Still got some reviews coming, though.
  • What’s going on with ThunderCats? Pixel Dan asks the question, and TNI (sort of) answers it. Bottom line: Bandai still holds the master license, their product line is not canceled, and they are currently rolling out ThunderCats product globally in conjunction with the TV show being airing internationally. So those dreams of a Four Horsemen-sculpted, MOTUC-compatible ThunderCats line must remain in dreamland for now.
  • Here’s NECA’s Gordon Freeman from Half-Life 2. Evidently they’re also bringing us a Robocop with an opening thigh holster (possibly spring-loaded).
  • TakaraTomy has released a short promotional CGI video (narrated in English) highlighting their upcoming Beast Saga figures. The anthropomorphic warriors blast each other with fire and water from symbols on their chests. Kind of reminds me of the Care Bear Cousins, actually.
  • I missed this sketchy-seeming incident in which Hasbro and its lawyers tricked and then threatened an Australian toy blogger over his review of a pre-release Nerf gun that he bought online. If Hasbro offers you free toys for a giveaway and you’ve recently reviewed pre-release items, think twice about providing them with your personal information.
  • I seem to have been one of maybe five geeks who actually enjoyed Prometheus. Sure, the story was messy, but the visuals and atmosphere were amazing…anyway, NECA’s making figures, including what’s basically (mild spoiler alert) the “Space Jockey” pilot from the original ALIEN. I’ll be getting that solely because I’ve loved the look of that character since the original film.
  • There’s going to be a Figma Link (from Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword). I did not know this. Awesome. Now that we’ve got Link and Samus, when do we get a Figma Mario?
  • Packaged shots of S.H.MonsterArts Little Godzilla.
  • LuchaSharks are a thing. A thing in the process of being developed by Galaxxor creator Ben Spencer.

Seconded… the complaints are really coming from the type of vocal minority that online communities and the nerdosphere tend to breed. Most nerds actually seem to have enjoyed it, and the critical reaction and box office have both been very positive.

I excused a lo o Bandai's mistakes with the Thundercats line, but the truth is the only god piece they made is the 8" Classics Lion-O. Bandai really need to improve the quality of the figures as they dont even compare the vintage LJN figures.

I feel like the backlash against Prometheus comes from people refusing to accept the truth that this was meant to be its own story that was somewhat tied to Alien, and everyone went in expecting Alien again. Is it perfect? No, but it’s not a bad film by any stretch.

  4. Don't worry. The nature of being a geek these days is to hate everything you would love if you didn't already know you were supposed to hate it.

  5. Shh! I probably won't get to Prometheus for a week or two, so I'm still dodging spoilers.

Any news on the ThunderCats cartoon? I never watched the old show, but am really enjoying the new one. (Which means it's doooooomed, like everything I love.)

    -Congrats on your new home!
-Glad I waited on NECA Robocop
-I LOVED Prometheus. I saw the early bird show in 3D on Sunday and have not stopped thinking about it since. The story was a little messy, I've got so many questions, but it was visually stunning. Can't wait for the figures!
    -Can't wait for Figma Link!!!

  7. I gotta say, that Link looks nice.

the prometheus figs are the most excited i've been for a mass market release since robocop.

  9. I want the Link soo bad…I wonder where I can buy one.

I feel like that nerf thing is one of those cases of “well, we’re paying the legal dept either way, so let’s put them to work!” instead of tossing crumpled paper balls into tiny basketball nets attached to wastebaskets, they’re tracking down bloggers and trying to make them turn informant.

That Nerf blogging incident is ridiculous. Seriously, after the way they've handled G.I. Joe along with this incident, I really wouldn't have a problem just severing my relationship with them.

BTW, that Gordon Freeman figure is amazing. Nice job, NECA! A glow in the dark Robo-Cop, Gordon Freeman, and Evil Dead 2 figures this year? Give those folks a raise! How about my Hasbro money goes to them, instead. 😉

    I enjoyed Prometheus, too!

Although it's linked to "Alien", I knew they weren't going to blatantly reveal all the secrets revolving around the Space Jockey. They had to play with the ideas in a subtle manner. Besides, they have to give us a reason to watch "Prometheus 2"!

I agree with you that the plot was sort of all over the place, but maybe we weren't paying attention to the keypoints….

I don't know if this guy's right, but it seems to make sense.
