What I’m Watching for at Toy Fair 2013

So Toy Fair starts today – well, officially it starts tomorrow, but there are two major events today: the Hasbro event, which is going on as I write this, and the Four Horsemen’s Toypocalypse party tonight, which will unveil their Glyos-based Power Lords toys.

Anyway, I thought I’d run through a breakdown of the toy lines I’m keeping an eye on this year:

  • S.H.MonsterArts – Obviously. I suspect there won’t be any new reveals, with the possible exception of Mothra and/or Battra from 1992’s Godzilla vs. Mothra. Biollante may be there, hopefully with a release date. I’d love to see a SHMA BioGoji (Godzilla as he appeared in Godzilla vs. Biollante), but I think that’s a long shot. Of course, my dream would be to see anything from the 1960s-1970s-era Godzilla films, but Tamashii doesn’t seem to be there yet.
  • Masters of the Universe Classics – I’m not sure if there will be anything left to reveal, but I’ll post my thoughts on anything new.
  • Star Wars Black 6″ – I’m hoping for pics of the other figures – R2D2, the Sandtrooper and Darth Maul. Evidently there will be a Boba Fett SDCC exclusive. If this is the only way to get a Boba Fett for this line and he turns out to be difficult or prohibitively expensive to obtain, I will not collect this line. I just don’t need to deal with that shit in my life.
  • Pacific Rim – My most anticipated movie of 2013 is apparently getting 6″ action figures from NECA. If you could only see how hard I’m crossing my fingers hoping these will look like they’re in scale with S.H.MonsterArts. They’re bleeding. My hunch, though, is that the figures will be a little too tall, since some of them will be as tall as 8″. Still, I am definitely on board for this line.
  • Aliens/Predator – I’m guessing we’ll see some new stuff from NECA. Hoping for more Predator soldiers (Jesse Ventura pleasepleaseplease) and Aliens Marines, and maybe a Ripley, or the Alien Queen.
  • Batman 1966 – The Mattel 6″ figures look quite nice, actually. Entertainment Earth revealed the Riddler and the Penguin, while TNI revealed Batman himself and what the article says is an in-scale 1966 Batmobile that will supposedly retail for $50. I at first thought it was just a re-issue of the Hot Wheels Batmobile, but maybe not…? $50 just seems low for that big a vehicle, but I suppose the Wind Raider was only $45. Anyway, the figures look great and appear to be almost entirely new sculpts, which is a refreshing change of pace for a superhero line from Mattel. I’m not sure whether I’ll be buying these figures or not, but I’m definitely tempted to at least get Batman. The figures will evidently be $16 apiece, which seems surprisingly cheap for a Mattel licensed line with new tooling. It almost makes me wonder if Warner Bros. is subsidizing this for some reason.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – I’ve only been cherrypicking this line, but I will no doubt continue to do so, especially if they start bringing more of the 1980s cartoon and Archie comics characters into the mix. (I still think Bebop and Rocksteady are better designs than Dogpound or Fishface.) A new Ray Fillet, might I suggest…?
  • Power LordsI’m curious to see what the figures look like. I understand entirely why going the Glyos route makes financial sense, but the small size and lack of articulation on the Outer Space Men kept me from really getting into that line, and if Power Lords are presented the same way, I suspect I’ll pass on most of them as well. Truth be told, while I was very fond of the few Power Lords figures I had as a kid, they were never a full-on obsession like Transformers, and my toy budget is going to be tight this year…I’ve got to draw the line somewhere. Okay, forget all that – based on this preview pic at IAT, even if the Power Lords are Glyos-compatible, they don’t look it.

I think that’s it…actually, I feel like I’m forgetting something, but anyway: what are you looking forward to seeing most at Toy Fair this year?

    1. Though I'm not getting one, I am glad for the MOTUC fans that Castle Grayskull is turning out so damn fine. Other than that I couldn't care less about that line anymore. Now if they made a Filmation He-Man and Skeletor, I'd buy one for all my friends, but this third-tier and POP stuff is ten pounds of *meh* in a five-pound bag.
    2. I have to somehow meet up with the other three GI Joe fans who are stoked to finally get an update of Budo! That guy looks awesome!
    3. Seriously, where the hell am I gonna put that 18" Keaton Batman from NECA?

  2. Black Arbor

Also, I'm a little miffed that we get a re-do Batman Beyond with his wings this time, when I just spent $50 on Ebay for him. Some might say that I deserve it for supporting a scalper, but I honestly thought we'd never get a re-release. Still gonna buy him for the wings, though. I'm weak.

The Robin figure isn’t looking too hot. I just hope we see more than just the main villains, but maybe they don’t think it’s good business sense to make Egghead and King Tut. And what’s this business about Toys R Us exclusivity? Better start bookmarking the the Ebay scalper’s pages… Also, I think the packaging word bubble with Robin saying "Holy High rise, Batman!" should be changed up for each figure. it works on the wall playset packaging, but for the basic figures, they need some individuality. Something like "Holy Hoofbeats!" or "Holy knit one pearl two!" which both actually came from the show.

    • Haha… just HAD to get that out, didn't you? I saw them tease the packaging last night and I was like "OH NO THEY DIDN'T" — While I didn't have much interest in the Lost Tribe, I'm going nuts over these Kenner figures!

I'd be very happy if Lava Planet got Redecoed into Cracked Tusk (my favorite when I was that li'l), but this is AWESOME ENOUGH.

My flickr account is going to be insanely predator-flooded come August. So will Ed Speir's, since even he put up vintage stuff…

    • Heh… looking forward to August then!

Castle Grayskull has BEEN REVEALED! And since it's incredibly huge and the same size as Mattel said it would be, BUT the drawbridge makes the door look a half-inch smaller, many fans are screaming, crying, rolling on the floor and holding their breath because they are WHINY BABIES. Seriously. Mattel even graciously remninded us that, if you're not satisfied, you can cancel your pre-order and not have to pay for it. Maybe it isn't Matty Collector that's evil. These fans hate everything, especially when they get what they want.

"WAAAAAH! WAAAAH! YOU GAVE ME WHAT I ASKED FOR, BUT I WANTED MOOOOOORE! BUH-BUH-BUH WAAAAAAH! IT'S A SLAP IN THE FACE WAAAAH! I HATE YOU!"

    • Jim

This is one of the most accurate statements I've ever read. Cheers!

    • I second that. Castle Grayskull is 99.999999% perfect. Without the thing costing like $699.99, I think they've done a great job paying homage to the vintage while improving upon it — and fully realizing in 3D some of the other components, like the stickers and other features.

This is going to sound strange, but the thing I think I am MOST excited about coming with CG is the Mark Taylor medieval training device (not sure what else to call it).

    • dayraven

the MTMTD is called a quintain, and it came w/ the vintage castle, it's not a proto-only piece like the bird flight pack thing.

as far as the castle goes, any time you release a piece at that price point, i think expecting some nitpicking is fine and completely within reason… it's a LOT of cash. is the castle good? yers, totally, the complaints on size are ill-informed, that's completely fair. could the piece be better for it's price tag? i think so. i think there's room even now to make a few different choices and make the percieved value more in line w/ purchaser expectations (screw the guys who didn't buy, they get ZERO say). for example, the pack-in hollow armor… that's a missed chance to make a figure right there. they could have left that out of the purchase, made him the figure released that dec, or make him the sub exclusive for 2014, and they'd have had money left to add in somewhere else, like making the elevator go all the way to the ground, or adding a little more width to the side ledge so you could stand a figure there without blue tacking their feet. that mer-man on display, sure, he was on a prototype, but you can clearly see that his sword holder on his back is against the wall, and he's pushed forward because of that, meaning without blue tack, he couldn't stand there. that's asshat.

is matty collector the enemy? no. is toy guru the enemy? no… but to make that kind of blanket statement, as if they'd done no wrong, is complete bollocks. they've done plenty over there to alienate their customer base, so let's not treat the bitter or disenfranchised as if they're not entitled to a few gripes, cuz they are. valid gripes.

  6. The_Fun_has_been_Doubled

MOTUC, 1966 Batman, Star Wars: black, and My Little Pony… ML doesn't do it for me anymore… I might get 90s Jean and call it a day until Jubilee shows up!

  7. Showa Godzilla from SH MonsterArts looks fantastic
    http://www.tohokingdom.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=

halfway down the page. So looks like you got your wish Poe, although not revealed at ToyFair

  8. Monte

I have been saving up my money to finally buy a Hot Toys figure…

And all the G.I. Joe reveals have destroyed that plan.

  9. Agent 86

I'm looking forward to (more) MOTUC reveals (if any) and seeing more photographs of Bebop and Rocksteady from Playmates' TMNT Classics.

Other than that, I'm not sure there is too much that interests me. I am hoping that DC Unlimited or Batman Unlimited reveal a TDKR Superman in the same MOTUC style as their TDKR Batman.

And if DST finally announced a Star Trek: Voyager line of 7" action figures that would be great. Or at least Janeway and Seven.

  10. I'm anxiously awaiting the reveal of a Julie Newmar Catwoman. If and when that happens, I have finally found the perfect woman for me.

  11. One of the first figures I want out of any Star Wars toyline is Han in Carbonite. The fact that he's a convention exclusive is another reason right off the bat that I think I'm going to pass on the Black collection.

  12. Harrig

For the Batman 1966 line, if they get as far as the Joker, should he have his moustache or not? Character or accuracy?

  13. Barbecue17

I hear you on the Star Wars Black line. Having Boba as an exclusive would kill things.

Also, is anyone else just cringing at the number of products Hasbro keeps mentioning they are putting out with only 5 points of articulation? If there is anything worse than overpriced toys, its crappy toys.

    • Mario

I've just read that the supposed SDCC Boba Fett would come with Han Solo in Carbonite to differentiate it from the general release. That's reasonable, I guess. I certainly don't need Han in Carbonite. I'm willing to bet that the paint deco of the exclusive will closely mimic his costume in ROTJ, & that the general release will be more ESB-based.

    • Harrig

Like they would only do one Boba Fett! Isn't he a main teat on the udder of the Star Wars cash cow?

I'm happy with just picking up a couple – the sandtrooper sounds great!

  14. Jon

I really hope NECA has an Aliens Queen, that would be awesome.

Anything NECA is doing from Valve, Aliens, and Predator has my complete attention.

I'm also curious is Play Arts is going to be doing any more Starship Trooper stuff or if that one release coming this year is just a one-off.

I just want to see the Castle in person, to make me feel better about it 😛

  15. In regards to the Power Lords articulation, Noisy posted a preview pic on his sight…and, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised: http://www.itsalltrue.net/?p=22651

    • Well, now see, that doesn't look Glyos-compatible at all…

    • Mario

I can't believe what I just saw!?!? There's not a Glyos whatever to be found in that pic, which is utterly exciting for me. Can't wait to learn more.

As for what I'm looking forward to see at NYTF that has yet to be leaked, I'm still optimistically hopeful that NECA will reveal my most desired Schwarzenegger properties (Commando, Conan, & the Running Man), done in their now very solid standards. Beyond that, I'm still pretty stoked about seeing what they have up their sleeves in general. Took 'em long enough, but NECA has become a company I really enjoy, after finally putting it all together figure-wise.
