Toy Aisle Trolls > Star Sores

Toy Aisle Trolls is a feature highlighting acts of vandalism to in-store toy items. If you find a ruined package, a stolen figure, a swapped-out figure, or any other such acts, take a photo (cell phone photos are fine if they’re not blurry) and email them to poe AT poeghostal.com. Also, please note: I’m deliberately being over-the-top with my condemnation of these people.

Today’s Toy Aisle Trolls comes courtesy of Poester Zach, who came across these examples of holiday season horribleness at a Walmart (of course) in Roswell, Georgia.

He writes:

“So on my recent trip to my Roswell, GA Walmart, I discovered some pretty awful Toy Aisle Troll handy work. Attached are photos of: the Walmart exclusive AT-ST replaced with last year’s Target exclusive AT-ST from the Endor battlepack; the Walmart exclusive Dewback and Sandtrooper replaced with a POTF2 Dewback and a Force Unleashed Trooper; and a Galactic Heroes 2-pack replaced with some older Galactic Heroes figures.

It just amazes me how the boxes have pretty clear photos of what’s supposed to be inside. The Dewback and Sandtrooper, for example…anyone with eyes should be able to see that the swapped figures look nothing like what’s in the picture on the box, especially the Force Unleashed trooper.

The AT-ST is slightly more understandable that it might slip past a customer service employee, but when put next to the real AT-STs it’s painfully obvious.

And the Galactic Heroes 2-pack…sigh, I mean the figures are on top of each other, they pulled out the card inserts that show the characters and they stapled the damn package together (the back of the bubble isn’t even taped down).

Star Wars seems to get hit by these cretins the most; I see at least 4-5 of these repackaged frauds in the SW sections at most of my local stores. Something really needs to be done about this. It’s become an epidemic and hurts all toy collectors and toy companies, all so some weasel can rip Walmart or Target off for a few bucks. I understand that Hasbro keeps releasing fantastic updates of old figures, but these losers have to bite the bullet like everyone else if they want the new versions.

I’d be more than willing to offer my help in recognizing frauds to local stores…I’d love to catch one of these turds in the act. They need to offer some sort of toy education to the customer service reps, because this is getting ridiculous. Or, you know, at least recognizing that a package that’s been stapled back together is probably not kosher…”

I was going to refer to this as an example of Scroogeism, but that’s not fair to Mr. Scrooge, who even before his transformation was never a thief–just a sociopathic miser. The guy who did this is just an ass whose actions, and most likely physical appearance, make all good children cry tears of bitter regret for their lost innocence.

Karmic Payback: He has to watch all three Star Wars prequels in a row with this guy talking the whole way through.

a marvel character surrounded by DCU action figs! and the item is worth 50 bucks!

    @RageTreb:

exactly, we as collectors know what we are seeing but others just wouldn't know or care.

however, the obvious ones, should be pretty easy to spot and therefor not be able to get returned.

as i said it pains me even more when i see this at toys r us where they are SUPPOSED to have more knowledge about toys…sigh…but what can you do.

@RageTreb: Case-in-point, one time at TRU I had to explain the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars to a woman shopping for her grandson. If you asked her the difference between the Enterprise and the Millennium Falcon, she would not have had the slightest clue. The layperson would not know the difference between a Dewback, a Wookie, or an Ewok.

    Here's an idea,when you have a returned,opened item,

*PROTIP:packages stapled shut -may- have previously been opened*

just send it back as "damaged." I've worked retail, this is what you're really supposed to do anyway.

There's a problem with employees trying to stop this unless they really know what they're doing– variants and chase figures. By definition those are the figure that DON'T match what's on the box and in some cases they're vastly different than just a simple repaint.

I also disagree that "anyone with eyes" would be able to see the Dewback switch. I think this is more of a case of being so immersed in Star Wars knowledge that you're unable to actually step outside yourself and look at it like a layperson.

Then there are people who don't care and/or don't want to start something with the customer. There's a good chance that some unwitting parent will buy the swapped-out toy anyway, right? So in theory the store isn't losing a dime.

I'm not defending this asshole, merely saying there isn't an easy way to stop this.

  6. Thomas B,

Thanks for posting that. It just helps my assertion that it's fraud and not some silly prank or a sticking it to "the man". To me, theft is theft and it should be punished. Just because it's toy theft it shouldn't be excused.

    coat not cost

  8. Thomas B

Thanks Poe. It was hilarious. He was trying to say I was wrong and didn't know what I was talking about. In true Superman fashion I took off my cost since I happened to have a gi joe tshirt on and I also have an arashikage tattoo. The same one snake eyes has. He was boned

  9. PrfktTear

Its nice to know there's some justice out there..

  10. Poe

@Thomas B: That's awesome that you brought the hammer down on one of these douchebags. Sweet.

i actually HAVE caught one ion the act with repacking the dvd packs from G I JOE as he was trying to return it to target. long story short is he got a hefty fine, community service and is banned from all TN target stores. on hisstank.com i go into detail about it.
p.s. he looked exactly like you would think he would look like. typical mouth breather that makes all the rest of us collectors look bad,

honestly i wouldnt even see the dif on the dewback/stpromtrooper set and i am a toy collectpr but not a SW collector.

and it isnt punishment watchin movies with that guy i would LOVE to watch the prequels with that guy. it would be punishment having to watch them on your own!!!!

i see lots of repacks but it is even more painful to see them at toys r us since they SELL toys and should know what to look for.

  12. Mario

That Dewback re-pack is some serious sneaky shit.

  13. MechaShiva

These trolls should be repackaged in a third world country.

  14. PrfktTear

@Templar: or even worse… having to watch the scenes of hayden christensen going all dawson's creek/teen angst!

  15. PrfktTear

I'm not very familiar with SW figures, but that AT-AT is obviously replaced in the first picture… and the fact that they accepted a stapled package is just poor service.

  16. george

I'm going to be honest with you on this one, Other than the AT-ST everything else just seems perfectly fine, don't blame the Store CS on this one. You really have to be in the Star Wars Collecting in order to see the difference.

  17. Templar

More Karmic Payback : Have the culprits' eyelids clamped open (think A Clockwork Orange) as he watches ONLY the scenes of Jar Jar Binks edited & looped together, including his appearances in the Clone Wars series……

Length of punishment ?? Depends on the gravity of their Troll crimes….

  18. Kid Nicky

People like this should just be lined up and shot.
