Mattel Unveils (Some) SDCC 2012 Exclusives

From Mattycollector.com

Masters of the Universe® Vykron™ ($30)

If clothes make the He-Man®, then this pitch prototype for the 1982 lineup is destined to be the star of the MOTU 30th Anniversary celebration thanks to a choice of three outfits: barbarian, spaceman, and military warrior! You’ll get him in-package dressed as a barbarian only at SDCC , but you can find him here at MattyCollector.com after the show packed as a spaceman or military warrior (all three outfits are included regardless of where he’s purchased). Want to know more about this multi-purpose warrior? Set includes one “buck,” or figure, with three different outfits/helmets to interchange between space, military and barbarian looks. Check back for the history of Vykron™, soon to be disclosed…

Poe’s Thoughts: Amazing. I suspect there will be fans who will hate this set, but as someone who cheerfully embraces the goofier and more sci-fi elements of MOTU, I think it seems really fun. Is it better than getting, say, Modulok? Well, no. But this is arguably a good convention exclusive, because plenty of fans can happily pass on it. On a side note, have we ever seen pics of the original prototypes?

DCU Tiny Titans ($20)

They may be miniscule, but they’re mighty! The core team of Tiny Titans is rendered in 1-1/2” scale in this 5-pack of collectible figures including RobinRavenStarfireCyborg, and Beast Boy. Sidekick City Elementary is just a quick bus ride away with packaging featuring specially commissioned artwork from Tiny Titans’ series creator. The display base has both the official Tiny Titans logo and a “flight” stand just for Raven.

I haven’t read Tiny Titans but I’ve heard good things, so this seems like a nice set.

DC Comics Vertigo™ Death ($25)

Some envision Death as a grim reaper or dark angel to be feared. But as created by Neil Gaiman for DC Comics’ line of Vertigo comics, the Sandman`s older sister is pretty, perky and always gets the job done. She`s been around since the beginning of time and is exactly the kind of girl you`ll want to follow into the unknown. Our 8” figure of Death wears her trademark ankh necklace and comes with a skull-themed display base.

And after all the discussion of Vertigo being off-limits to DCUC… The sculpt looks great, but I’m wondering, is this a statue or a figure?

Ghostbusters™ Dana as Zuul ($25)

“There is no Dana, only Zuul!” Our long-awaited 6” figure of Dana Barrett as Zuul from the first Ghostbusters™ features authentic, film-accurate sculpting right down to her golden gown. And, with two interchangeable lower bodies she can stand or, when she tires of waiting for the coming of Gozer, sit on the included bench display.

No question here – this is a statue. Pass.

Disney • Pixar Cars 2012 Comic-Con Mater ($30)

This year’s Comic-Con vehicle captures the hilarious scene from Cars 2 when our beloved Mater finds himself in a Tokyo bathroom stall. Just like in the movie, Mater is surprised with flashing lights, catchy music, and a thorough scrub down! This memorable moment comes to life with moving side jets, as well as a jet that springs up to clean Mater’s undercarriage, lifting his back wheels off the floor. Covered in suds, Mater experiences hi-tech action unlike anything he’s ever seen in Radiator Springs!

Blah blah blah Cars

Polly Pocket® DC Comics Villains Set ($19.99)

It’s a guaranteed adventure with this trio of comic-book character costumes for Polly® and her friends! Polly®, Lilia® and Lea® arrive in a themed 3-pack dressed as their favorite DC Comics villains: CatwomanPoison Ivy, and Harley Quinn.

I’m not sure how popular the She-Ra pack was last year, but these are cool, I guess.

Images of these items are in the works as you read this so be sure to come back soon!

  • Hot Wheels® Masters of the Universe® Volkswagen Drag Bus
  • Hot Wheels® Scooby-Doo!™ The Mystery Machine
  • Hot Wheels® K.I.T.T. Knight Industries Two Thousand
  • Monster High® – To be revealed. It’s a mystery to us, too!
So…no 6″ vehicle Voltron, I guess. Bummer!

Vykron is absolutely crazy weird – which is absolutely perfect MOTU as far as I'm concerned and I'll be seriously considering getting multiples so I can have one of each outfit on display.

Dana as Zuul is extremely worrying for me – we've been promised four Ghostbusters figures this year and one of them (which has been announced as a coming figure for, what, a year now?) ends up being an SDCC exclusive? I don't think we're going to see 2012 figure #4…. I'll absolutely get her as I need a Dana, but I don't like my chances for ever getting a Jeanine, the rest of the Courtroom Ghostbusters or any Terror Dogs.

Death I just don't understand. She looks to be a plastic statue and is in an 8 inch scale. Why? If she was a status in 6 inch format, then maybe as she'd at least vaguely fit in with DCUC even if she was an unarticulated blob, but in an odd scale that doesn't fit with anything Mattel has previously produced, I just don't see the point. Maybe all the Vertigo figures Mattel produce will be in 8 inch scale as a means of explaining why Swamp Thing was so big last year?

Overall this is the least excited I've been about Mattel's SDCC exclusives in many years and that's disappointing, but at least my wallet will be a little happier!

  2. I'll admit, I was a little puzzled by the Vykron… but I too love and embrace the goofier aspects of MOTU — these are so awful look straight up out of the 80s'. Count me in!

  3. WHAT I WANT:

    He-Man dressed as a policeman…
    He-Man dressed as a construction worker…
    He-Man dressed as a biker…
    He-Man dressed as an indian…

    • Mysterious Stranger

      Don't forget Sailor He-Man

    • Dead Man Walking

But they would need some sort of playset. Somewhere they could work out, and hang out with other young men…

    • Dark Angel

Young man, there's no need to feel down!
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground!
I said, young man, 'cause your in a new town-
There's no need to be unhappy!

Young man, there's a place you can go,
I said, young man, when you're short on your dough!
You can stay there and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time!

It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A!
It's fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A!
They have everything for young men to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys!

I might the only one who prefers Vykron's space outfit. It's got a cool pulp sci-fi vibe.

Matty's news page also mentions a Dark Knight Rises exclusive but for some reason it isn't listed with the other "soon to be revealed" exclusives.

  5. Barbarian & Steampunk He-man look good. I dunno about Boba Fett He-man though!

I'm so disappointed at how they've screwed Ghostbusters fans >:( Totally unacceptable. All those broken promises (all of them in 'writing' by Mattel or Scott) and worse… no replies now! Poor form, Mattel!

  6. Newton Gimmick

So outside of the MOTUC figure(s) nothing here has any real articulation. A few cuts here or there, but even the Polly Pockets are more or less statues.

I've never heard of these MOTU guy(s) but whatever, it looks cool so I'll probably buy it. Still I think it's kind of an underwhelming choice.

  7. Polly Pocket and friends as the Gotham City Sirens? Sold! I think it's great. It's a weird feeling to actually want to buy a Polly Pocket item.

The rest I can pass on.

  8. JAdrian

The Prototype Three Pack is a pretty cool gimic, but a gimic none the less. The sculpts on the the armor and weapon sets looks really amazing, but the horseman have some crazy, superhuman consistency mojo working for them so great sculpts are expected. I think it fits in really well with the notion of looking back and celebrating 30 years of MOTU as a license, but I think most of us collect MOTU for the nostalgia factor and to see characters/toys we loved as children being brought to life as KICKA** figures as adults and it can be hard to get pumped for a design/character that none of us had any connections to. smart choice though, very smart.

Personally, I'm all about the Polly Pockets!

  9. The_Fun_has_been_Doubled

Give Spector an AK and when Jitsu and Ninjor get made, their Katanas and you get closer to a MOTUC Deadpool!

I dunno why this isn't working, but that link above is an image of the prototypes

Not feelin' it this year. I had not even seen these thing until a week ago when it was rumored they'd be the exclusive. I'm in the MOTUC game for masterpiece editions of the toys I loved as a kid. Wonder Bread was OK as it was a long standing legend. Marlena is cool cause she was in the series. I have no emotional attachment to these three goofballs so it's a let down.

Death is just baffling. Was it on anyone's 'must have' list? Why do here b4 The Sandman?

As for Dana, she was supposed to be in the sub and we were supposed to have some special gift for being GB subscribers. Let's hope she's the gift delivered to our door.

  11. misterbigbo

I love the historical concept and prototype figures in MOTUC, and though I no longer collect the line, this might suck me back in. Looks great, and if some fans balk at it I bet sales will be made up for by those who get three!

And @jestergoblin, would it help if I told you polly pocket reminds me of the bronies?

  12. Nik

Ok so, instead of just reducing the GB sub from 6 figures to 4 figures (it's not like we prepaid for it, or anything and what we did pay was the $20 for the rookie who came out anyway) they cancel the subs which forces us into the "day of" $22 price. Not only did our would be exclusive cost us $2 more dollars, but now Dana is magically an SDCC exclusive and now $25 (which should have been $22 which should have been $20)

    F***.

Its obvious she wasn't planned as an exclusive. They don't show you in progress shot of those for a year and show it at cons as a regular MattyC figure. This is simply an excuse to tack on a few extra dollars. Lame.

  13. Mario

Well, my first EVER easy pass on MOTUC. My wallet is muy xD

  14. The Dana as Zuul just seems like a creepy stalker thing to own.

  15. Can someone please convince me not to get the Polly Pocket Villains set?

  16. Vikron (like the name) is spot on for the prototypes in the Power and Honor Foundation book. Though the spaceman was wearing Boba Fett's armor and helmet : )

Love the set, and will buy.

No DCUC or 6" scale DC figs at all? Hmm.

  17. I don't mind goofiness…. I just don't like the look of his helmets… they just look stupid. The Barbarian doesn't look as bad, except for the helmet, but I'm not going to buy a figure that looks like Vikor… I already have that slot filled, thanks.

  18. Reverend Ender

For me, the MOTUC exclusive looks awesome.
