Odds ‘n Ends > Mattelocalypse Averted

  • Let’s give credit where credit is due: while the WSOD did make an appearance yesterday, the Cyber Monday sale overall ran much more smoothly than previous months, and there seems to have been an abundance of product available. Only a few items are sold out now, and Battle Cat hung around much longer than anyone expected.
  • DST continues to eek out the occasional Battle Beast Minimate here and there. When are we going to get a real line of these things?
  • The new MOTU vs. DCUC 2-packs are starting to hit. I was thinking I wasn’t going to get them, but I know I will once I see them. I ain’t buying them off eBay, though. Anyone seen them in stores yet?
  • The packaging and constructs for the Hal Jordan vs. Thaal Sinestro set look great, but shouldn’t Sinestro be wearing the Sinestro Corps uniform, and Jordan his modern togs? Or alternatively, shouldn’t the “evil” constructs be green? Still though…great looking set. Why didn’t we get anything like Green Lantern Classics for Batman when Dark Knight came out?
  • A Chinese eBay retailer has some early samples of DCUC 16: Creeper, Robin, Riddler, Mercury, Jonah Hex. I didn’t realize Robin and the Creeper had double-joints until I saw these–that’s awesome. Here’s hoping for a super-articulated Batman down the line. Does Azrael Bats have double-joints too?
  • Speaking of Batman, here’s your question of the day: what’s your definitive Mattel Batman? Is it Zipline Batman, DCSH Batman (blue or black), DCUC Detective Batman or Burton Batman, DCUC TRU exclusive Batman or Walmart Robin 2-pack Batman…? My all-time favorite remains DCSH black-and-gray Batman, but a new modern DCUC Batman–with a black bat symbol, pouch belt, and double-jointed limbs–might top him.

  1. DST was trying to make Battle Beasts that were completely different and…well, they were ill-received. Check out http://battlebeasts.blogspot.com/2010/07/new-scul
When I asked DST about them at NYCC this year, they said they were trying to figure out how to present them.

My favorite from my collection is the DCSH series 3 Bats. It's hard to say though — I too am still waiting for a 'definitive' one.

The one made by Mattel that I'd most like to have – but don't yet – is the Bat signal Batman. (And the Bat signal is a pretty awesome accessory, too.)

  3. Poe

@Mecha-Shiva: I'm glad that Batman doesn't kill–it's one of my favorite things about him. It shows a certain idealism that lies at the core of an otherwise dark character. Even Frank Miller didn't have Bats kill in Dark Knight Returns (the less said about All-Star Batman, the better).

The problem with DCSH bats is that he had closed fists and the plastic cape is a hindrance. But best sculpt overall.
Also,Bob Kane's batman uses guns,it's just the PC people that complained about it so the writers had to do a write around for the change.

  5. MegaGearX

DCSH Batman is my preferred Batman too. I love the detail on his boots and gloves.

  6. @Poe: I have no problem with a Batman that murders crooks. Not like punisher murder, but the can't help it kind of murder, like when a cop kills a crook. I don't get how he could clear out that factory of all the crooks without blowing it up with them in it. Ask them to leave? Maybe that's just me though, I have a lot of problems with the character of Batman now.

I think we can all agree that we need an 89 Batmobile in scale to DCUC figures though. And not one that's insanely expensive like something Hot Toys makes.

  7. Frogster

DCSH Black and gray Bats is my ultimate Batman, and I don't even own it. I have the blue and grey. I love the grittiness right down to the visible seams on the costume and gloves. The pouch belt is very realistic.

  8. Fengschwing

@Mysterious Stranger: Well I'll be! I might look at picking that up after X-Mas if the funds allow. Cheers!

  9. Mysterious Stranger

@Fengschwing: GL Classics Wave 1 is in stock at BBTS. Just got the email that mine was ready to go. Blew a giant hole in my bank account that I wasn't expecting until after the first of the year but hey whaddaya gonna do.

    @Poe:

    80's action flicks need bodycounts.

    What's next,no internet in Robocop?

  11. The DCUC Wave 1 Batman is my current perfect Batman. I think it's just due to my mind linking the figure with my childhood love of the Super Powers toys and the Neal Adams art from comics.

I also concur that the Burton Batmobile was the best ever, hands down.

  12. Ben

I'm fine if those Battle Beasts are never released. I love the original line to death, and to me, there is no way anyone can improve upon it.

  13. Fengschwing

I've seen some Green Lantern Classics wave 1 stuff on ebay too.

  14. Andy

I have the TRU exclusive with the black Bat symbol and pellet belt amongst the big seven of the justice league but the DCSH one is with the Bat-family on another shelf.

I've seen in store reports of both the MOTU vs. DC and the new DCUC 2 packs in TRU

I'll give them that it was not bad as it could have been. I was pretty much expecting the worst, worst case scenario… like the web site blowing up my computer or something. It took me 45 minutes, but I was able to complete my order and get what I wanted, so I guess in the scheme of things, I can't complain.

What was most surprising was that Battle Cat lasted so long… either not as many people were buying him or they actually had enough supply to meet the demand. At last check He-Man was "almost gone" and Skeletor was still available… which makes sense since they were the only three products that were from a secondary run and not leftover stock.

I can do without Stratos, but more than likely I’ll want that Mer-Man repaint once I see it in person. I'm not actively hunting for them though. Too many TRU pegs are still littered with the first two, so hopefully once they reach saturation point they will be easy to find.

DCSH black-and-gray Batman comes close to being my perfect Batman and Zipline Batman would be if he had better articulation. Right now my definitive Batman is the TRU exclusive with the black Bat symbol and pellet belt. Although I typically prefer the pouch belt, the re-use of the Public Enemies Batman's belt didn't look right to me, so I opted for other.

If they ever make a MM-style Keaton Bats, I don't think that figure would ever leave my side.

'89 Batmobile is tops, nothing can ever beat that.

  16. The Goon

Gotta go with you Poe, the DCSH black & gray holds the center spot on my DC shelf and I cant see a better version than that coming anytime soon.

  17. Poe

I just watched the 1989 Batman the other day. I'd forgotten how murderous that Batman was…he mows down guys with the machine guns from the Batmobile, blows up a factory (and about a half-dozen mooks outside the vehicle), and tries to chaingun the Joker from the Batwing.

    "Rubber bullets. Honest." I don't think so…

That said, I do prefer the Dark Knight outfit to the molded abs and pecs of the 1989 version.

But nothing will ever beat the Burton Batmobile.

  18. dayraven

my definitive bats hasn't been made yet… i want tall ears and double knees and elbows. like, if i could have gotten the horsemen to give us "arkham asylum" bats w/ double knees and elbows, that'd be my bats… but we didn't, so i keen solitarily into the night, waiting for my bats to come…

  19. Until I get an 89 DCUC batman, my favorite by default is the all black walmart version. Sigh.

  20. Mecha-Shiva

    A movie masters Keaton Batman,someday…
