And just like that, Mattel renders what little I cared about the art book fiasco moot. Holy crap. Scare-Glow! Savage He-Man (a.k.a. Wonder Bread He-Man–I totally called that, btw). Walter Peck–WALTER PECK!?

Here are Rustin Parr’s notes from the Mattypalooza panel.

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE

  • 2010 subscription comes with poster-map of Eternia and Wun-Dar, a.k.a. Savage He-Man (If you get 3 subs, you get 1 package with 3 Wun-Dars, but all subs ship separately each month from any other Mattycollector purchase).
  • Sub does not count bonus figures or giant figures like Battle Cat or “army builder two-packs”
  • Accessory packs are coming
  • Figures: September – Webstor; October – Teela, plus first bonus figure: Zodak repaint in modern paint scheme w/ tattoos and different bio; November – Scare-Glow; December – King Randor, plus bonus figure Green Goddess; January – Princess Adora, w/ bonus figure of Battle Armor He-Man (w/ three interchangeable pieces for chest); February is Trap-Jaw w/ alternate Kronis head and arms, plus Battle Cat and display stands; March is Moss-Man, who is flocked w/ own head and flocked Beast Man head)

GHOSTBUSTERS

  • 6″ figure every other month starting in October. October – Ray Stanz w/ logo ghost; December – Winston w/ ghost trap w/ blue energy explosion; February – Walter Peck w/ Ghost Containment Unit; May – Peter Venkman (yes, he was shown)
  • 12″ figures: One per quarter, start with Ray Stanz, then Egon, then Venkman, then Winston
  • Will be doing Marshmallow Man, but not as a CnC; “going to do him right”

Odds ‘n’ Ends > Pre-SDCC Edition

  • The Fwoosh has a first look review of Egon. The glasses don’t look as bad as they did in the packaging shots. Looks like he is indeed in the same scale as Movie Masters, so you can have Egon duke it out with the Joker. I will say that while the new Slimer is nice, I’m glad I have the NECA one.
  • Early images of the Hasbro SDCC booth, including some Marvel Universe figures. (Apparently you have to register to see the bigger pics.)
  • Too soon? But I kid the toy industry. Frankly, it’s MJ’s own fault for making such a famous zombie video. And I think he’d be amused by the whole thing, honestly.
  • Dr. Mrs. Ghostal and I watched the pilot and first two eps of Warehouse 13 last night. It’s not as quirky as Eureka and the two main characters aren’t (yet) as appealing as Scully and Mulder, but I like Saul Rubinek’s nutty professor, and the “haunted objects” are an interesting hook–sort of like a reverse Reaper. They need to drop the whole Secret Service angle, though–it’s just too hard to explain what the hell they’re doing at crime scenes. In any event, I’m willing to give it a try–so many of my favorite shows (like X-Files and Star Trek: The Next Generation) started with fairly weak first seasons, particularly when viewed in retrospect.

Mattel has posted in-package photos of Egon on their Facebook page. Some fans are complaining about the packaging, but I like it, particularly the way the blister resembles the Gozer building.

The toys look good too (except for Egon’s glasses…I may have to see if I can find a good replacement for those). Oddly enough, I think this set has become the SDCC exclusive I’m most looking forward to.

Comic-Con is coming!

For us toy collectors, the granddaddy of events has to be San Diego Comic-Con. The 2009 show starts July 23rd (preview night July 22nd) and runs through July 26th, and this year I’m bringing more cool stuff than ever before!

Lines will only be allowed to get as long as the designated roped-off area, but “fast-pass” tickets will be handed out to reserve your spot later that day. Limits on all exclusives will be six per person, per visit to the Mattel booth.

If you choose to wait in line a second time, you’ll be eligible to buy another 6 figures (there will also be a limit of six figures for online purchases after the show). It should all go very smoothly for the best buying experience yet!

Wizard World Philly Roundup

First off, my immense thanks to Doubledumbassonyou for kindly taking some photos of the Four Horsemen’s WWP booth for you to enjoy. Let’s all thank him and, more importantly, click the link and stop by his blog for a spell.

There wasn’t a whole lot of toy news from Mattel or the Four Horsemen, as they’re saving that up for SDCC, but I was able to dig up a few nuggets of information here and there. They also had prototypes of Teela, Webstor, and DCUC Question on display, as well as Egon and Ray from Ghostbusters. 5 Questions With > MisterBigBo

MisterBigBo, who comments here occasionally, is a real-life friend of mine who I’ve actually spent time with in person. He’s taken time out of his busy schedule as a brand-new dad to answer a few questions about his toy collecting.

Base of Operations: The Commiewealth of Taxachusetts
History: Regular ole suburban lower middle class kid who grew up in the 80s. Star Wars fan first, but like most boys of that generation I had a healthy action figure collection. I have gone on to become a teacher, a dad, and study traditional Japanese martial arts, but the toys are still there.

1.) What were your favorite toys or toy lines as a child?

Though I started with Star Wars, moved with the trends to Transformers and He-Man for a while, GI Joe was my favorite. The designs and the articulation caused me to stay with the line into junior high, after most of my friends had moved on. As a youngster I had a little of everything: a few M.A.S.K. vehicles, and one or two Sky Commanders, Army Antz, Silver Hawks, C.O.P.S., Centurins, Marvel Secret Wars and D.C. Super Powers, Captain Power, Chuck Norris Karate Kommandos, Battle Beasts, Starcom, Eagle Force. . . those are the faves that I can remember right now . I suppose my tendency these days to collect only one or a few of any given line is a continuation of that trend. (more…)
